Wild Thing is a song by the rapper Tone Lōc from 1988. It appeared on his album Lōc-ed After Dark .
history
The title of the song is an allusion to the phrase "doin 'the wild thing," a euphemism for male sex, unlike in The Troggs ' Wild Thing of the same name (which was later covered in a psychedelic version by Jimi Hendrix ), where that "Wild thing" was a girl.
After its release in 1988, Tone Locs song reached number 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and was made even more popular by a parody of the song by Weird Al Yankovic entitled Isle Thing . The song sold over two million copies in the United States and was twice awarded platinum records . In the UK , the song reached number 21 on the charts.
The song uses a sample from Van Halen's Jamie’s Cryin ' . Van Halen's management spoke to Tone Loc, and management allowed him to use the sample for a payout of $ 5,000. This decision was made by the management, although the band themselves did not know about this agreement. The band members were eventually registered as co-writers of Wild Thing and didn't expect the song to be a hit. When the song later became successful, the band received an additional $ 180,000. Alex Van Halen stated that he first heard the song on the radio and didn't realize that this song uses a sample from a song by his band. Only later did he notice the resemblance to one of his songs. He said: "We did our part and got paid, but Tone Loc and his people made millions out of it ..."
In 2000 the song was remixed by the singer Peaches .
Music video
The production of the music video only cost $ 500. In the music video, the style was adopted from Robert Palmer's music video for Addicted to Love , with scantily clad women playing the guitars alongside Tone Lōc. The actress Tracy Camilla Johns took on the leading role of the many women in the music video.
