Samhain was an American musical group that existed from 1983 to 1987. The founding member and the only permanent member was singer and lyricist Glenn Danzig . Samhain is considered the musical link between Danzig's previous band, the Misfits , and the follow-up project Danzig . The name is derived from the eponymous Celtic festival Samhain and is usually pronounced [ ˈsˠəuˈnʲ ], sometimes also [ ˈsæmheɪn ].

history

After differences arose between Glenn Danzig and the other band members of the Misfits, these were dissolved. Along with the Misfits, Samhain are considered to be the founders of today's horror punk . The range of the music of Samhain was much broader, however. A sluggish sound, with choirs in places, characterizes the musical style of the band, which is somewhere between horror punk, gothic rock and heavy metal of the 1980s.

After the Misfits broke up, Danzig formed the band with Eerie Von and Al Pike. In August 1984 the first Samhain album Initium (Latin = new beginning) with a total of ten songs was released on the Plan 9 record label . In April 1985 the EP Unholy Passion was released with five songs. Was Initium provided yet with strong Misfits influences, Samhain drifted now on Unholy Passion already in gothic rock regions. With November Coming Fire , Samhain's last regular album was released in 1987, on which the Misfits classic Halloween appeared in a new guise. This album was also Glenn Danzig's first record, which he also produced himself. In early 1987 Samhain switched to American Recordings and it was renamed Danzig . The dark concept of Samhain, playing with occult symbols, was also reflected in the first Danzig albums.

Although Samhain has basically ceased to exist in 1987, on the occasion of Box Set's release in 2000, some of the band's former musicians were toured again temporarily with the band Danzig. Glenn Danzig himself described this as a one-time thing and excludes further appearances by Samhain.
