True Crime: New York City is a computer game developed by Luxoflux and the successor to True Crime: Streets of LA . It is classified in the genre of third-person shooters . It bears strong resemblances to the Grand Theft Auto series ( GTA ). In contrast to its predecessor, it only offers a linear course of action.

A sequel with the title True Crime: Hong Kong should be released in autumn 2010 for Xbox 360 , PlayStation 3 and PC . However, due to the poor quality of the title, Activision stopped development. In August 2011, Square Enix bought the rights to the title and released the sequel itself under the name "Sleeping Dogs" .

action

The player takes on the role of Marcus Reed . After a campaign of revenge on his former gang, he turns his life inside out. Years later, Reed finds himself in the New York Police Department. A family friend who works there looked after Marcus and helped him get a job with the police. However, when he finally gets the police badge he deserves, his mentor dies in an explosion in a house. As you learn later, he had a suitcase with important information. It slowly emerges that there is a mole in our own ranks who worked for four criminal cartels. So begins the search for the mole and the fight against its client. The mole can eventually be found. To Marcus' astonishment, his mentor, believed to be dead, also reappears, who only staged his death to steal stolen money. Out of anger, Marcus shoots or arrests him. From here one of two possible stories by Marcus father follows, depending on whether the player has received more “Good Cop” or “Bad Cop” points.

Gameplay

The main task is to successfully complete the approximately 30 missions in the main story. The gameplay is almost identical to that of the predecessor. The player has to go to certain places in the game world where a level is waiting for the player. Due to the size of the game world, the player drives there in a vehicle or takes a taxi. Alternatively, the underground can also be used. Opponents await in the level who have to be defeated by firearms or in close combat. The stealth elements of the predecessor are no longer available.

Depending on how the player behaves, there are plus or minus points. In principle, there are plus points for solving all crimes and for successful missions. Anyone who disarms and arrests criminals with targeted shots or hands in evidence to the police station earns additional points. For all actions that are not legal, such as shooting opponents and civilians, selling confiscated objects or extorting bribes, you get point deductions. Since the player is promoted analogously to the score and thus has access to better weapons and cars, the player is ultimately encouraged to act "well". In the end, the rather "good" player also gets to see a different ending than the rather "bad" one.

The player can learn different fighting techniques in dōjōs . During the fights the player can also use special strokes, similar to the finishing moves . In other shops, vehicles can be upgraded, clothes can be bought or the character's health can be topped up. Illegal street races or combat tournaments are also possible.

The game world is a virtual replica of Manhattan that was modeled with the help of GPS data.

Reviews

In the reviews, the game got rather negative reviews. The short main storyline and the numerous bugs were criticized. 4players rated the game with 59% (PS2) to 27% (PC), gameswelt with 67% and pcgames with 68%. The poor implementation of the console game on the PC is criticized.
