Dark Ages is the fifth studio album of Metal - band Soulfly . It was released on October 4, 2005.

Emergence

During the creation phase of the album, Max Cavalera worked with many international artists from different musical genres, for example with Billy Milano from SOD and MOD , the Megadeth bassist David Ellefson and the Serbian reggae / dub musician Nemanja "Kojot" Kojić, guitarist and Singer of the band Eyesburn . The latter already worked with Cavalera on the Soulfy album Prophecy in 2004. Furthermore, Cavalera undertook trips to different countries (Turkey, Serbia, Russia and France) in order to include country-specific or elements of foreign cultures in the album. At Carved Inside , Frontlines and Inner Spirit were music videos produced.

The album cover was designed by the tattoo artist Leo Zulueta .

reception

Jason Birchmeier from Allmusic attested the album consistently powerful and experimental sound with no low points and awarded 4 out of 5 possible points in his album review.

“The 15-song album never does hit a lull. It arcs slightly, kicking off with a punch to the face and peaking with 'Molotov', “Frontlines”, and “Innerspirit” before drifting into edgier waters of experimentation that ultimately recede with the album closer, the ten-minute instrumental 'Soulfly V '. ”

In his review for laut.de Michael Edele complains about the function of some pieces as album fillers, but emphasizes the mixture of hardness and experimental sounds. Michael Edele awards Dark Ages 3 out of 5 possible points in his album review .

“[...]“ Bleak ”is too inconsequential and incoherent, a typical filler. Even the short “(The) March” is somehow superfluous, […] but it is above all “Innerspirit” (with guest vocals by the singer of the Serbian band Eyesburn) that makes you sit up and take notice, and once again shows why Soulfly are so unpredictable. "

Editions

Dark Ages appeared in two different editions in stores. Both the 15-track regular album and a digipak containing 3 additional bonus tracks were released . The album artwork also differs in the choice of color in both editions.
