D-Beat (also known as Discrust , Discore and Kangaroo in Sweden) is a style of hardcore punk that was developed in the early 1980s by imitators of Discharge , after whom the genre is named. Discharge himself could have taken the beat from Motörhead . The first genre representative was the group The Varukers .

Characteristic

The lyrics of the D-Beat consist mainly of shouted slogans. The genre differs from its forerunners in its minimalist lyrics and closer proximity to heavy metal . It's very similar to crust punk , which is a harder and more complex variety. The statements made by D-Beat bands are typically anti-war and anarchistic, and thus follow the dark nuclear war symbolism of the 1980s anarcho-punk bands. The genre was particularly successful in Sweden with well-known representatives such as Anti Cimex , Mob 47 , Driller Killer , Wolfbrigade and No Security, Totalitarian , Avskum , Skitsystem and Disfear are also Swedish D-Beat groups. Other D-beat bands are Doom from Great Britain, Disclose from Japan, Crucifix and Final Conflict from the USA, Ratos de Porão from Brazil and MG15 from Spain. Ian Glasper writes: "In the turbulent wake of Discharge, a hundred Discore - or D-beat - punk bands jumped up around the world."

Swedish D-beat

The first Swedish D-beat song is Marquee by Rude Kids from Stockholm , recorded in 1979. KSBM ( En Slemmig Torsk ), Missbrukarna and the best-known group Anti Cimex followed . Anti-Cimex's second 7 "EP Raped Ass has been described as" one of the roughest and most violent hardcore releases ever. "Other groups of this type included Shitlickers , Moderat Likvidation , Mob 47 and Asocial . Mob 47 is attributed to the style of Discharge with American hardcore punk. Many of these late bands started playing crust punk. Scandinavian groups such as Driller Killer, Totalitarian, Skitsystem, Wolfbrigade and Disfear are some of the most famous D-beat bands, although their development tends to be in Headed for Death Metal , influencing a number of new Scandinavian D-Beat and Crust bands like Livstid .

D-Beat also describes a special drum technique that goes back to Tez Roberts, the original drummer of Discharge, and which became "the trademark of his band". However, members of Buzzcocks and Diamond Head have used this technique before. The term was coined by Sore Throat singer Rich Militia in 1988 to refer to Dave "Bambi" Ellesmere's drumming, Roberts' successor, on Discharge's EP Why? to describe. The D-Beat is "the defining element of a genre of music that is essentially, as strange as it sounds, musically only defined by it: Crust". It is also occasionally used in metal , for example by Motörhead or by Metallica in Hit the Lights .
