The Varukers is an English hardcore punk band from Leamington Spa that was formed in 1979, disbanded in 1987 and reunited in 1993.

history

The band was founded in 1979 by singer Anthony "Rat" Martin. A short time later the guitarists Bruce Riddel and Tom Lowe, drummer Gary and bassist Garry Maloney joined the cast. The first local appearances followed. In 1980 a first demo was recorded that contained four songs. The song Government's to Blame would later be re-recorded and featured on the debut album. After recording the demo, drummer Gary left the band, so bassist Maloney took his position and Lowe now played bass. Then guitarist Riddel went to the Tempest Records shop in Birmingham to ask if there was a label where the second demo could be sent. The shop owners Keith Thorton and Brian Harris were just starting to build their own label called Inferno Records, which resulted in the EP Protest to Survive being released in March 1982. Garry Maloney left The Varukers to join Discharge upon publication . Brian "Brains" Rowe came to replace the band. In 1982 the single I Don't Wanna Be a Victim followed . Upon release, Lowe left the band to join Anti-Sect . After bassist George joined the band as a new member, the band went into the studio to record their debut album. After the recordings, the band separated from Inferno Records and signed a contract with Riot City Records , about which the debut album was released in late 1983 under the name Bloodsuckers . Then Broken Bric joined the band as the new bass player, who was first heard on the single Die for Your Government . The band starred in the movie About Punks and Skinheads , which also featured bands like The Exploited , Vice Squad, and Blitz . This enabled the group to increase its profile. Then Andy Baker joined the band as the new drummer and Damien Thompson as the new guitarist. The new line-up recorded the single Led to the Slaughter and was released in 1984. In August of the same year, the EP Another Religion, Another War followed . After the recording, Broken Bric left the band and was replaced by bassist Tony May. May was shown on the album, but he was not heard in the recordings. The first appearances outside of Great Britain followed in early 1984 . After these appearances Thompson and Baker left the band to form the band Sacrilege in Birmingham . Paul Miles joined the band as the new guitarist, while Graham Kerr played bass. Both had responded to an advertisement in Sounds magazine. This was followed by a European tour in which the band played together with The Mau Maus from Sheffield . Then the band separated from Riot City Records and switched to Rot Records , which in 1984 released the EP Massacred Millions . The same label also released Live in Holland , a concert recording on June 29, 1984 in Hengelo, the Netherlands . In 1985 the next album followed with One Struggle, One Fight . Andy Baker had previously left the band to also join Sacrilege. Baker was initially replaced by drummer Gilb, who in turn was replaced by Warren Beecham, who was ultimately to be heard on the album. Shortly after the recordings, Beecham left the band again because he had to return to Rochdale due to family problems . Beecham has been replaced by Kevin Frost from Cerebral Fix . In 1986, Ian "Biff" Smith also joined the band as the second guitarist. Smith's first appearance with the band was in London with Discharge. This was followed by further appearances in Great Britain, among others together with GBH , before the band split up in 1987.

In 1993 the band came together again and consisted of singer Martin, guitarist Smith, drummer Frost and bassist Brian Ansell. The EP Nothings Changed followed through Weird Records . In 1994 tours through America, Scandinavia and Japan followed . In addition, the band signed a contract with the German label We Bite Records , which was followed by the 1995 album Still Bollox But Still Here . The album was recorded at Premier Studios in Corby . The album contained a compilation of the band members' favorite songs from the previously released sound carriers, with the band now having better recording equipment. In 1998 the album Murder was released , whereupon the Canadian Kieran Plunkett was to be heard as a new member as bassist . Various tours followed. Plunkett had to return to Canada, however, so Les Duly, Mark Greenwell (both worked for Concrete Sox ), Mattias "Kenko" Kennhed ( Meanwhile ), Todd ( Distraught ) and Justin Greaves ( Iron Monkey ) took over the positions. Marvin Gauntlett from Chaos UK then joined the band as permanent bass player . In 2000 the next album How Do You Sleep followed ??????? via Go Kart Records . The release was followed by appearances in Japan, Australia , New Zealand and Brazil . The album was released in South America via Peculio Records and further gigs followed in Brazil before the Portuguese Ricardo Fernandez joined the band as the new drummer. A little later, Shaun Duggan ( Hard to Swallow ) joined the band as the second guitarist. In 2003, Martin also joined Discharge. In the following years various compilations were released , as well as the album Hellbound in 2005 via Asylum Records . The phonogram was recorded in Premier Studios. The album was released again in 2009 under the name Killing Myself to Live , the album containing two songs from the compilation Still Our Future You're Brass Up . The sound carrier was released via Vile Records .

style

The music was heavily influenced by the Sex Pistols . The band was formed by singer Martin after seeing the group perform on Top of the Pops . The band played classic punk on their first album . The band describes himself jokingly as "shitty Discharge -Abklatsch", the description cited as "Discharge backward through a cement mixer" from the sounds and are as influences next Sex Pistols and Discharge alcohol, other drugs, Motörhead , Crass , The Exploited , UK Subs , Crisis and The Stranglers . On the EP Another Religion, Another War , which was released in 1983 , the influences from the emerging Thrash Metal became clearer. The band then played aggressive Thrash Metal on the 1985 album One Struggle, One Fight . Since their EP Protest to Survive , the band wrote mostly songs that spoke out against the war.
