The Great Southern Trendkill is the eighth album by the US thrash metal band Pantera . The album was released on May 7, 1996 through Eastwest Records . The album peaked at number four on the Billboard 200 and was certified gold in its release year and a platinum record in 2004.

Origin and style

In contrast to its predecessor, The Great Southern Trendkill was a bit more diverse. Several quieter pieces are included, such as 10's , Suicide Note, Pt. 1 and Floods , however, with the title track and about Suicide Note, Pt. 2 also contain very fast and comparatively monotonous pieces. Again was recorded with Terry Date , but the vocal recordings took place in Trent Reznor's Nothing Studios in New Orleans , as there was tension between Phil Anselmo and the rest of the band during the recording .

reception

Götz Kühnemund , editor-in-chief of Rock Hard magazine , emphasized in his review that since Far Beyond Driven it is no longer “in” to like Pantera. Because the album has more groove and more melodic passages, but also more brutal pieces, he called The Great Southern Trendkill a "double-edged matter". He personally rated the record positively, because Pantera “play really tight and let a lot of dynamism and musicality shimmer through even in the most extreme passages”. He awarded 8.5 out of ten points. Steve Huey from Allmusic called the quiet pieces the "catchiest moments" on the album. Long-term Pantera fans would find a lot of positive things on the album, but overall it was an inconsistent release. It awarded three out of five stars.
