The Alive and Hostile EP is the second EP by the US metal band Pantera .

background

The Alive and Hostile EP was released shortly after the band's third studio album, Far Beyond Driven , in April 1994, but does not contain any song material from this album. This EP is a compilation of live recordings that were made in 1990 and 1991. Since Pantera completely ignored their four previously released studio albums from 1990 onwards, it follows that the EP only contains songs from the studio album Cowboys from Hell , released in 1990 . Despite the huge success of the previously released album Far Beyond Driven , the Alive and Hostile EP missed an entry into the charts.

The EP was re-released twice as a bonus of a special edition: on the one hand as part of the Driven Downunder Tour '94 - Souvenir Collection released in Australia in 1994 and once as a bonus of the 20th Anniversary Edition of the studio album Cowboys from Hell released in 2010 .

Origin of the live recordings

Although only the text "All tracks recorded live" was printed on the inlay of the Alive and Hostile EP and no further information on the origin of the five live recordings is given in the booklet, the general view, all recordings, became more and more popular over time would the appearance at the Monsters of rock festival in Moscow originate in the 1991st This view can be read several times on the Internet. This opinion was reinforced by the release of the three-CD 20th Anniversary Edition of Cowboys from Hell in 2010: In this special edition, the EP is included as a bonus and in the booklet of this re-release it is printed that all five recordings of the EP by said appearance in Moscow. But this information is not correct, and ironically, this is what this special edition by Cowboys from Hell proves for the first time . In addition to the Alive and Hostile EP on CD2, this edition contains further live recordings, recorded in the Foundations Forum in Los Angeles in 1990. If one now compares the live recordings of the songs Cowboys From Hell and Heresy from the Alive And Hostile EP with those who have been included in the Foundations Forum, a. also based on the announcements of front man Phil Anselmo quickly realized that it is the same. The main difference is in the mix. While the recordings for the Alive and Hostile EP in 1994 were significantly improved and polished up, in the course of the publication of the recordings from the Foundations Forum they appear much rougher and have hardly been edited.

Regarding the song Cowboys from Hell , there is further evidence if you compare the recording of the Alive and Hostile EP with the recording that is included on the singles I'm Broken / Slaughtered or Planet Caravan , because the version that was on the contained in both singles mentioned, actually corresponds to the live recording of the concert in Moscow and therefore differs significantly from the recording of this EP.

This results in the following summary of the origin of the live recordings of the Alive and Hostile EP : The live recordings of the songs Domination , Primal Concrete Sledge and Psycho Holiday actually come from the appearance at the Monsters of Rock Festival in Moscow in 1991. The recordings of the songs Cowboys from Hell and Heresy , on the other hand, come from their appearance at the Foundations Forum in Los Angeles in 1990.

Additional confusion with regard to the allocation of these recordings arises on the one hand from the fact that the live recordings from Moscow, which have been published several times, differ significantly in terms of their length. This is due to the fact that in some versions the announcements by Philip Anselmo and Fanjubel have been cut or shortened, in other versions not. In addition, the single Planet Caravan, which was also released in 1994, caused further confusion: On this single, the live recordings of Cowboys from Hell and Heresy were incorrectly declared as "Recorded in Moscow 1992". Actually, on the one hand Cowboys from Hell is the live recording from Moscow, recorded in 1991, and on the other hand Heresy is again the version recorded in 1990 in the Foundations Forum in Los Angeles.
