from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lowbrow ( English "undemanding" ) is a style of fine arts that has its origins in the US American custom and surfing culture of the 1950s and the later underground comix . The frequently used term Pop Surrealism (" Pop - Surrealism ") is sometimes used synonymously, sometimes viewed as a sub-form of Lowbrow. Most of the Lowbrow's works are paintings, but some artists also created sculptures and installations.

style

Characteristic for Lowbrow is the playful and humorous processing and mixing of objects from pop culture in the style of surrealism and fantastic realism . The objects and icons of today's “ retro ”, predominantly American media phenomena, such as classic cartoons and comics, sitcoms from the 1960s, rock music , pulp magazines or B-movies, provide significant inspiration .
