life and work

Fancy Reaper, colored pencil on paper, approx. 20 × 20 cm

Heiko Müller works as a freelance artist, but also works as a professional media designer and illustrator. In addition to his hometown, his work has been exhibited in New York , Los Angeles , Seattle , Chicago , Paris , St. Petersburg and Tartu , among others . He has also curated various exhibitions in Hamburg. He has a diploma in design from the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences .

Heiko Müller's pictures deal with influences from fields as diverse as medieval icon painting , the painting of the Flemish and Dutch masters , folk art and contemporary comic art . His first major breakthroughs came with combinations of modern computer graphics and medieval Christian icons. His most recent works are close to the American lowbrow and pop surrealism scene.

Animal portraits with an eerie, apocalyptic mood are particularly characteristic of his current work. They often look like figures by Bosch or Brueghel in a modern version. In his own words he is “fascinated by the spiritual horror found in the works of the Old Masters. I'm trying to find out what happens when you combine that mood with the serene and harmless world of rural folk art. "

In the meantime Müller drew with crayons and pencils, developing special techniques to give the pictures the appearance of oil paintings. Then he returned to painting, preferably with oil and acrylic on paper and oil on canvas. His work is shown mainly in the USA and Europe.

Heiko Müller lives with his wife and two sons near Hamburg.
