L'Âme Immortelle ( French for 'the immortal soul') is an Austrian duo consisting of Thomas Rainer and Sonja Kraushofer . The band was founded in 1996 by Thomas Rainer (born February 8, 1979 ) and Hannes Medwenitsch, who left the band in 2002 for “health reasons”. The band has existed for more than 20 years and was able to record numerous chart successes.
Band history
L'Âme Immortelle has its roots in the metal sector. From around 1994 Thomas Rainer played bass in a black metal band and took over the vocals there at times. After the band was expanded to include a keyboard player, Rainer developed an interest in electronic music.
After L'Âme Immortelle was founded in 1996, the tracks Final Oath and Life Will Never Be the Same Again were produced, whereupon Rainer and Medwenitsch went in search of a singer. Sonja Kraushofer (born November 6, 1978 in Baden (Lower Austria) ), who had studied dance, singing and acting and is a qualified musical performer, ended this search, after which the trio was complete. In 1997 they produced their demo tape songs that bleed like wounds and applied to the Liechtenstein label MOS Records Ltd., which they signed. The debut album Songs That Bleed Like Wounds was released that same year.
A year later, the second album In a future of tears and steel was released, which made it to the first chart placement in the German alternative charts . In 1999 L'Âme Immortelle toured Europe supporting the band Christian Death . The contract with MOS Records Ltd. was not renewed and so the group switched to the Trisol Music Group label .
The third album When the Last Shadow Falls was released and since then L'âme Immortelle have also been known outside of Germany. Their first headlining tour took place in 2000. In 2001 L'Âme Immortelle achieved their first success in the German album charts , the album Then I've Lived for Free, which climbed to number 48. The founding member Hannes Medwenitsch left the band a year later for health reasons. From now on they were supported on guitar by Ashley Dayour, also known from the band Whispers in the Shadow .
Her next album, Als die Liebe died , also unexpectedly became a chart success (highest position: 38th place in Germany). In spring 2003 L'Âme Immortelle toured with ASP and Unheilig through large parts of Germany. The DVD Disharmony reached number nine in the German DVD charts.
In 2004 the band switched to the Supersonic Records label , a subsidiary of Sony BMG Music Entertainment . Together with Oomph! the single Brennende Liebe was released. A short time later, the track 5 Years and the corresponding album Gezeiten were published, which reached chart positions in Germany.
Another studio album followed in 2006 with Auf Deine Schwingen , which contained significantly more pop elements than its predecessor. That same year, announced L'Ame Immortelle 2007 for the tenth anniversary of her best-of album 10 years on, included the new tracks.
On January 25, 2008, L'Âme Immortelle released their ninth studio album, Nameless . In addition, the band switched back to their old label Trisol Music Group , as announced in December 2007. The album was released as a double album, the second CD containing cover versions of other bands, including Whispers in the Shadow , Spiritual Front and Steinkind . On 25 July 2008, the remix album was released by strange hand of friendly bands of all songs by that remixes and cover versions Nameless contains, played in the same order.
After that, the band remained quiet for a long time. Rumors began to circulate that they had disbanded. At the end of January 2012, the duo reported back with the album Momente . It was released on January 27, 2012 and contains eleven titles. With Fragments (published on April 27, 2012) Thomas and Sonja presented the official sister album to Momente . This contains reinterpretations of ten tracks from Moments .
style
music
The debut Songs that Bleed Like Wounds still shows clear traces of Rainer's Black Metal past. His electronically distorted singing is used gutturally , while Kraushofer's voice , which is based on pop music , forms the gentle counterpart. Those based on simple basic patterns tracks are often techno rhythms and classical accompanied -inspired components. This style was expanded until the album Then I Lived for Free and occasionally expanded to include future pop and drum and bass elements (for example with the title “Innocent Guilt”). On the second album ... in a future of tears and steel there is more undistorted male vocals for the first time.
Although the band's music was clearly electronic, many journalists found it difficult to categorize their style. When asked whether L'Âme Immortelle saw themselves as a Gothic band, Rainer replied:
"That's a good question. It's hard to be pigeonholed. For me personally, »Gothic« is more like Gothic Rock . At least that's my definition. "
In 2002, Als die Liebe died , changed to electronic pop music and conventional, partly German-language alternative rock with influences from the New German Hardship . The band remains true to this style - with a few exceptions - to this day.
Texts
L'Âme Immortelle's songs are written in German and some in English . They mostly have melancholy lyrics and are often about severe lovesickness .
