Throw That Beat in The Garbagecan! (or THROW THAT BEAT IN THE GArbAgECAN! ) is a German indie rock band from the 1980s and 1990s.

history

The band was founded in 1986 in Nuremberg by Klaus Cornfield and Oliver Kolb. The band name is borrowed from a song title of the B-52’s . The best-known incarnation of the band consisted of Klaus Cornfield ( vocals , guitar ), Oliver "Polli Pollunder" Kolb (guitar, vocals), Lord Ray ( bass ), Iwie Candy X07 ( keyboard , vocals), Lotsi Lapislazuli (vocals, recorder , Melodica , glockenspiel ) and Alex Sticht ( drums , vocals).

The album debut Tweng! (1988) was recorded without female reinforcement and with a certain lo-fi attitude. In the following year the siblings Iwie Candy X07 and Lotsi Lapislazuli joined the band and helped define the typical Throw-That-Beat-Sound, which for the first time in this form on Large Marge Sent Us! (1989) could be heard. On the first album (1988) Rossy played the drums, on the second (1989) H. K. Animal and on the third album (1991) H. K. Animal (as "Hansel") and finally Alex Sticht shared the drummer position. The first few years of the band's history were recorded by Klaus Cornfield in the comic Throw That Beat In The Garbagecan (1992).

In 1990 Throw That Beat in the Garbagecan were signed by the major label EMI Music (at that time the largest record label in the world), which released all albums from Not Particularly Silly . In the same year they made it onto the cover of Spex .

In 1993 Lotsi Lapislazuli left the band to concentrate on studying graphics. Gina Vaporjieff D'Orio (formerly Lemonbabies ) took over the role of the background singer from 1994. Since the 1994 album Superstar , the band has performed under the shorter name Throw That Beat! on.

The band traveled all over the world (including Japan, USA, Great Britain, Portugal) and played well over a thousand concerts. In 1994 Throw That Beat! at the legendary Roskilde Festival .

Despite the popularity of audiences and music critics at home and abroad, the band's big breakthrough was denied. In 1997 the band broke up by mutual agreement after a tour that was only moderately attended. After the split, Klaus Cornfield, Gina D'Orio, Lord Ray and Alex Sticht continued on stage with various band projects, while the other band members shifted their professional focus to work behind the scenes.

On September 13, 2014 the band gave a concert in the sold out Berlin club Lido after a 17-year break with the classic line-up of Lotsi Lapislazuli and Alex Sticht (and with a guest appearance by Gina D'Orio) . Speculations about the continued existence of the band were not denied convincingly by the band members. On April 16, 2016, a second reunion concert took place in the Künstlerhaus Nürnberg . According to their own statement, they played their very last concert on October 26, 2018 in Hamburg's Knust .

style

The band's musical style is melodic guitar pop with catchy, sometimes sugar-sweet melodies and sometimes playful, almost child-like singing, often contrasted by melancholic, sometimes psychedelic rock epics (which can be easily understood from the first two tracks by Superstar , where the band this contrast consciously stages). The band draws on stylistic elements of beat , rock 'n' roll , garage rock and glam rock and occasionally quotes (especially on the first three albums) the style of children's songs or songs from children's television in instrumentation, themes and melodies . From Superstar (1994) onwards, grunge guitars and occasionally drum computers and strings are also used.

Further typical elements (which, however, do not necessarily have to be present):

With a few exceptions, the lyrics are in English and mostly deal with topics typical of pop, such as being in love and the pain of separation ( Funny, How Love Is , Talkin '' 'bout Love, etc.). The lyrics are often stylistically exaggerated (“Baby!”, “Honey!”), Often humorous or sarcastic ( You Only Think Of Me When There's No Program On TV , Some Alien… etc.). Texts that deal with the subjects of “longing for childhood” or childhood experiences ( A Chocolatbar For Breakfast , Just 16 etc.) fall outside the typical pop context . Occasional song lyrics that are directed at other band members ( Lotsi Go Go Go , Let Me Sit Next to Iwie etc.) are also rather unusual .

The main songwriter was Klaus Cornfield; But the other band members also contributed numerous songs, for which they usually also took on the lead vocals. The visual component was also important to the band: They produced numerous video clips (e.g. no less than six for the album Not Particularly Silly ), some of which were also integrated into the stage show, as well as the short film Cool - the Movie . The record covers were designed in a comic style (except for Sex Tiger ) and some were provided with comic strips penned by Klaus Cornfield and Lotsi Lapislazuli.
