The wash house is a party and leisure facility in Potsdam .

history

The listed building was built as a royal garrison steam washing facility according to plans by building officer Bernhardt and garrison building inspector Bohm in 1880/82. Even before that there was a smaller wash house, which was planned by Carl Hampel in 1840 and later served as an inspector's house, which is now known as the office .

Both buildings, made of red or yellow-red bricks, are relics of industrial culture and Prussian architecture at the site. The chimney at the wash house served the large steam boilers and was decorated in an ornate way.

Until 1988, when a fire put the facilities out of operation, the building was operated as a large laundry, most recently by VEB Rewatex . When it was closed in 1990, the building fell into disrepair. It was only gutted in 1992 as part of an artist squatting and then expanded for event operations. The Waschhaus eV was founded in 1993 and regular cultural activities began.

From the beginning of June 2007 the wash house and the office were renovated.
