The private Lithuanian high school in Hüttenfeld (a district of Lampertheim ) is the only recognized Lithuanian school in Western Europe . It was founded by the Lithuanian Community in Germany when Lithuania was occupied by the Soviet Union .

history

In 1950 Lithuanian refugees founded their own grammar school in Diepholz , which moved to Hüttenfeld in 1954. The Lithuanian National Community bought Rennhof Palace for the school. Before that there was a Lithuanian grammar school for refugee Lithuanians in the former Rebdorf monastery in Eichstätt , Bavaria , from 1946 to 1949 , which functioned as a refugee camp for Balts. During the Cold War , the grammar school accepted students of Lithuanian origin from all over the world in the affiliated boarding school. The school became a center for the Lithuanians in exile.

After Lithuania's independence in 1990, the grammar school lost its importance, but, unlike the Latvian grammar school in Munster , it was able to assert itself , as it now aimed, among other things, at the children of repatriates . Students of Lithuanian descent from overseas, from Lithuania itself and also German students use the possibility of bilingual lessons. Teaching is in Lithuanian and German .

In the summer of 2015, the Lithuanian Gymnasium entered into an informal cooperation with the University of Music and Performing Arts Mannheim - Academy of Dance - through the admission of ballet students from the Academy to the boarding school of the Lithuanian Gymnasium. The ballet students can also become high school students. For the 2015/2016 school year, the first three ballet students - all three came from South Korea - were admitted to the Lithuanian grammar school.

The school authority and the highest legal body of the school is the Kuratorium des Litauischen Gymnasium eV (currently eleven members). According to its statutes, the Kuratorium consists of delegates from various institutions. The Board of Trustees consists of representatives of the Central Council and the Executive Board of the Lithuanian Community in Germany , the ecclesiastical representatives for the pastoral care of the Roman Catholic Lithuanians in Germany, the Lithuanian Evangelical Lutheran Church in Germany and representatives of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Lithuania . According to the statutes, the headmaster is also a member of the board of trustees by virtue of his office. The direct management has a three-person board authorized to represent.
