The Latvian High School in Munster was the only recognized Latvian school in Western Europe when Latvia was occupied by the Soviet Union . It was located in the Kinderhaus district of Münster .
history
The Latvian Gymnasium Münster emerged in 1951 from a German refugee camp . During the Cold War , the grammar school accepted students from all over the world, so that the Latvian community in Münster and the grammar school developed into a center for the Latvians in exile . Teaching was in Latvian . A boarding school was attached to the grammar school .
Since 1986 there has been a Latvian Center at the same location in Münster , to which the grammar school was assigned. After the restoration of Latvia's independence in 1990/1991, the grammar school lost its importance and was finally dissolved in 1998.
Since then, the Latvian Center has been active in adult education , running a kindergarten and hosting a summer school .
