The Flippers were a German pop band .

history

In 1964 Manfred Durban, Claus Backhaus, Franz Halmich, Manfred Mössner, Manfred Hehl and Hans Springer from Knittlingen in Baden-Württemberg founded the Dancing Band , which was renamed the Dancing Show Band a year later . In 1965 Hans Springer was replaced by Bernd Hengst. The group played to dance on the weekend, so they could soon make a name for themselves in the region. In 1966 Manfred Mössner was replaced by Roland Bausert . In 1967 Olaf Malolepski came to the combo for Manfred Hehl.

In 1969 the band members Bernd Hengst and Franz Halmich composed the song Weine nicht, kleine Eva , which was released as a single under the new band name The Flippers , and a year later under Die Flippers . The song became a sensational success on radio and television and is still one of the evergreens of German hits today . The title Only with you alone was then published , but it did not match the success of its predecessor. The group then recorded the third single Sha La La, I Love You, in 1970 , a cover version of the song Cha-La-La, I Need You , which the Dutch band The Shuffles had released the year before. The single was again a great success, so that in 1970 the first long-playing record Die Flippers was released.

In the years that followed, the group recorded numerous titles and long-playing records, gave concerts in Germany and neighboring countries and became the most successful hit band of the 1970s. In 1973 Jean Frankfurter became the Flippers producer, with a few interruptions. In 1974 Claus Backhaus left the group. In the late 1970s, record sales fell, but the band continued to give concerts in southern Germany. Roland Bausert left the group on December 31, 1979. He was followed by Albin Bucher in 1980 as the new singer and the move to the new producer team Mick Hannes and Walter Gerke. But even the new line-up no longer brought the great success of the 1970s. In the course of 1984 Albin Bucher and then Franz Halmich left the group. After Bucher's departure, he was briefly replaced by his predecessor Roland Bausert.

What remained was the trio that was commonly known as Die Flippers into the 21st century : Bernd Hengst, Olaf Malolepski and Manfred Durban.

In 1985, in cooperation with the new production team Karl-Heinz Rupprich and Uwe Busse, the album Auf Rote Rosen Fall Tänen appeared . This album heralded the group's comeback the following year, earning the Flippers first gold record . In 1986 The Red Sun of Barbados became a huge hit . With this title, the Flippers won first place in the ZDF hit parade and appeared with the song in other television programs. Numerous hits and appearances on radio and television followed. In the following years, the three musicians received several gold records and were also awarded numerous prizes.

In 1988 the Flippers went on tour for the first time. Annual tours followed from the 1990s. They gave their biggest concert in 2004 in the Westfalenhalle in Dortmund in front of 17,000 spectators. From 1987 to 2007 they were 13 times in the top 10 of the German music charts.

In 1994, ZDF filmed the first special on Mallorca on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the pinball machine. Further specials were created in Venice (1996), on the Côte d'Azur (with Marlène Charell , 1998), in Ticino (with Sandra Studer , 1999), 2000 in Greece , 2001 in Portugal , 2002 on Lake Garda , 2003 on the Costa del Sol and 2005 in Istria .

The 40 Years Flippers anniversary tour lasted from November 2008 to March 2009. On October 17, 2009 they announced that their next tour (from November 2010 to March 2011) would be their last, i.e. their farewell tour. In the program The Spring Festival of Folk Music 2011 with Florian Silbereisen , the band was bid farewell on April 9, 2011 by Alfred Biolek in a laudatory speech .

The singer Olaf Malolepski released his first solo album with Thousand Red Roses on Ariola in 2011 .

Drummer and founding member Manfred Durban died on October 20, 2016 in his hometown of Knittlingen .
