Helmut Lotti
Helmut Lotti (* 22. October 1969 as Helmut Barthold John Alma Lotigiers in Sint-Amandsberg in Ghent ) is a Belgian crossover - and pop singer .
In 1995 he released “Helmut Lotti goes Classic”, the fastest-selling and best-selling album in Flanders . Over the next few years, Helmut Lotti became known beyond Belgium's national borders for his setting and popular interpretation of classical pieces of music. With over 13 million albums sold, he is considered the most successful singer in Flanders.
Life
Beginnings and breakthrough as a pop singer
Helmut Lotti was born as the first of three sons of Rita Lagrou and Luc Lotigiers. He came from a Catholic and musical family: his father, who left the family in 1974, is a classical tenor, while his grandfather Bart Lotigiers (1914–1995) was artistic director of the Ghent Opera from 1973. Helmut Lotti made his stage debut here in 1974 with an extra role in the operetta "Friederike" by Franz Lehár . As a child he was enthusiastic about the music of Elvis Presley and the Crooner . Since 1988 he has performed under the pseudonym "Kevin Leach" in talent competitions with Elvis interpretations.
In 1989 he took part in the “Soundmixshow” by Hendrikus “Henny” Josephus Huisman on the Dutch broadcaster KRO and took second place with his interpretation of Elvis Presley's “My Boy”. Two months after his performance, he got his first record deal with BMG Ariola and, through an employee of the record company, the stage name “Helmut Lotti”, which he himself described as “terrible” in an interview. His first manager was Roland Beirnaert.
Helmut Lotti began his career as a pop singer. The first single "Kom Nu" was released in 1989 and reached the top of the charts, the debut album "Vlaamse Nachten", which contained almost exclusively Flemish pop songs, was released the following year and was awarded gold .
Roland Beirnaert has been replaced by Piet Roelen, who has been a manager for Helmut Lotti since 1991. In 1992 Helmut Lotti's second album "Alles wat ik voel" was released, which again contained Flemish pop songs and was awarded gold just like its predecessor. Helmut Lotti was awarded a platinum record for the first time for his record "Memories", which contained well-known Flemish titles in English. For his fourth album “Just for you”, which was released in 1995 and contained English-language pop songs, Helmut Lotti worked on a large number of titles for the first time. This album was also awarded a gold record.
From pop to popular classic
As early as 1994, upon request, Helmut Lotti gave concerts with a 23-piece orchestra in which he performed interpretations of classical pieces. For his interpretation of Lucio Dallas' title "Caruso" he received a standing ovation for several minutes during a performance, so that his manager Piet Roelen finally suggested recording an album with classic songs. The orchestra, with which Helmut Lotti had already worked, was enlarged and the Belgian André Walschaerts won as conductor. Since then it has accompanied Helmut Lotti on all of his albums and tours as the “Golden Symphonic Orchestra”.
“Helmut Lotti goes Classic” was recorded on September 8th and 9th, 1995 in Antwerp and was released in the same year. The album contains 18 interpretations of classical melodies or arias. Like many of Helmut Lotti's subsequent albums, it was arranged by Wim Bohets , who also plays as a pianist in the “Golden Symphonic Orchestra”. In addition to newly arranged classical melodies, for which Helmut Lotti wrote English lyrics, the album also contained classical interpretations of the Russian title "Kalinka" and Franz Lehár's "Lips Silence" as a duet with the Swedish Emma Philippa Hjälmås. With around 600,000 copies sold, “Helmut Lotti goes Classic” was the fastest and best-selling CD in Flanders at the time and was awarded platinum twelve times.
Due to the great success, the album "Helmut Lotti goes Classic II" was released in 1996 and "Helmut Lotti goes Classic III" in the following year. Both albums again contained interpretations of classical melodies and arias in a modern arrangement, which, however, were interpreted more easily than was the case on "Helmut Lotti goes Classic".
Helmut Lotti's first album to be released in Germany was “Helmut Lotti goes Classic” in 1997, which was released in Belgium in the same year under the title “Helmut Lotti Goes Classic III”. The other "Goes Classic" albums were released in Germany in 1998 and 1999. The originally first "Goes Classic" album was, however, considered obsolete in 1999 because Helmut Lotti's singing style and interpretation had changed. The Belgian album “Helmut Lotti goes Classic” was re-recorded for the German market, but also for other international releases. In Germany it appeared with slight changes in the selection of titles under the name "Helmut Lotti goes Classic III". The first three albums of the “Goes Classic” series differed in their selection of titles and the language of individual titles depending on the country of publication, so that in 2003 all three albums were released under a new title in a final version.
country | The Red Album (2003) | The Blue Album (2003) | The Castle Album (2003) |
---|---|---|---|
Belgium | Goes Classic (1995) | Goes Classic II (1996) | Goes Classic III (1997) |
Germany | Goes Classic III (1999) | Goes Classic II (1998) | Goes Classic (1997) |
While Helmut Lotti's first three “Goes Classic” albums were published in Germany, he released a double album in Belgium with a modernly arranged classical music. "Helmut Lotti goes Classic Final Edition" and "A Classical Christmas with Helmut Lotti" were released in 1998 and were the provisional end of the pure "Goes Classic" series. Both albums were also released separately. In Germany, “A Classical Christmas with Helmut Lotti” was released in 2003 under the title “The Christmas Album”.
Career in South Africa
Helmut Lotti's first international success after Belgium and the Netherlands was South Africa in 1996 . After numerous concert tours, he therefore followed the suggestion of his manager Piet Roelen to record an album with traditional African songs after a total of five classical albums in a row. The recordings for the TV special for the album “Out of Africa” were made in autumn 1999 in the Basotho Cultural Village, a village in the Qwa Qwa National Park in South Africa.
Helmut Lotti's aim was to make African music sound European without losing the African. However, there were also critics who accused Helmut Lotti of having softened the pieces of African folklore by his ingrained style and thus not living up to his own claim to hit the heartbeat of the continent .
The album, which was released in Belgium in 1999 and in Germany the following year, contained traditional titles from the continent in Afrikaans and the Bantu languages Zulu , Xhosa and Swahili, as well as popular English-language titles such as Elton John's " Circle of Life ", which is related to the African continent employ. The track "Out of Africa", which gave the album its name, was written by Helmut Lotti himself. The album “Out of Africa” stayed in the German charts for 50 weeks, making it Helmut Lotti's most successful album in Germany to date.
Latin American repertoire
"Latino Classics" was Helmut Lotti's first album, which was released in 2000 in Belgium and Germany at the same time. Like the following album "Latino Love Songs", which was released in 2001, "Latino Classics" also contained interpretations of well-known Latin American songs, among others from Cuba, Mexico, Brazil and Argentina under the accompaniment of the Golden Symphonic Orchestra. The film recordings for the TV specials of both albums were made in Mexico.
Lotti's "Tribute to the King"
In 2002 Helmut Lotti fulfilled a long-cherished wish with the album "My Tribute to the King". He started his career as an impersonator of Elvis Presley, whom he describes as his idol and has now released an album with interpretations of well-known songs by Elvis Presley. These differ significantly from the rock versions based on the original, which Helmut Lotti regularly sings as an encore at the end of his concerts and which also fill a large part of the program in his rock concerts in the casino in the Belgian seaside resort of Knokke , which he has been giving every summer since 1997 .
On the album, Helmut Lotti and arranger Wim Bohets tried to preserve the atmosphere of each track while still remaining typical of Lotti. [...] We don't want to shock the fans .
For recordings of the TV documentary, which was also being broadcast on German television at the time the new album was released, Helmut Lotti traveled to Las Vegas , Memphis , Nashville and Tupelo, among others , and met Elvis Presley's companions there. He played with Elvis Presley's guitarist Scotty Moore and his drummer DJ Fontana . “My Tribute to the King” reached number 2 in the German album charts and is thus Helmut Lotti's best-placed album in Germany to date.
Classic of Pop "in Symphony" - continuation
With his next album "Pop Classics in Symphony", Helmut Lotti remained true to his style and interpreted well-known pop and rock songs, among others by Queen , CCR , Barry Manilow and Barry Ryan , with symphonic accompaniment. In contrast to numerous earlier albums, the record released in 2003 did not contain any of Helmut Lotti's own compositions. Together with Cliff Richard he sang the duet "Danny Boy", which was also released in 2006 on Cliff Richard's album "Two's Company". The TV special for the album was recorded live at a concert on the Grand-Place / Grote Markt in Brussels.
Russian folk songs with the Golden Symphonic Orchestra and the Black Sea Cossack Choir
After interpreting African and Latin American titles, Helmut Lotti turned to Russian folk songs on his 2004 album. The title song was composed and written by Helmut Lotti himself. Helmut Lotti was musically supported on his album not only by the Golden Symphonic Orchestra, but also by the Black Sea Cossack Choir . The arrangements for the album were made by Helmut Lotti and Wim Bohets. The recordings of the TV special for the album were made in Saint Petersburg , Siberia and Moscow , where recordings were permitted on Red Square and in the Kremlin , among other places . Even before it was released, “From Russia with Love” achieved gold status with 100,000 pre-orders in Germany .
Following the publication of “From Russia with Love”, Helmut Lotti announced a longer creative break in March 2005, which was not least due to family reasons. His second marriage, in 2001, to then-student Carol Jane Poe, divorced in spring 2005. Helmut Lotti was previously married to Kimberly Grosmans from 1990 to 1997. The marriage, from the daughter Messalina (* 1991), was annulled in 1999. In May 2009 Lotti married the journalist Jelle Van Riet for the third time.
Comeback in swing and big band mode
After a break of almost two years, Helmut Lotti released the double album "The Crooners" at the end of 2006. The music of the crooners had accompanied Helmut Lotti since childhood and had a considerable influence on his own singing style. The so-called crooning is a particularly soulful interpretation of ballads with orchestra or big band accompaniment. On his album “The Crooners” Helmut Lotti concentrated less on versions of the older crooning of the 1920s, but on pieces of the modern, more jazz-heavy crooning, whose representatives included Frank Sinatra , Perry Como and Bing Crosby . The first CD under the title “The American Way” contained classics of the genre such as “Everybody Loves Somebody”, “ Just a Gigolo ” or “Blue Moon”, but with “Moon River” and “True Love” also titles that no longer existed Dated from the crooner's time, but could be interpreted accordingly. The second CD entitled "My Way" contained only Helmut Lotti's own compositions in the Crooner style. As with the previous albums, Helmut Lotti was accompanied by the Golden Symphonic Orchestra. “The Crooners” stayed at the top of the Flemish charts for ten weeks and was Helmut Lotti's eighth number 1 album in Flanders.
On the later album Soul Classics in Symphony (2018) Lotti interprets songs by, for example, Charles Trenet , Jim Croce , Frank Sinatra and Prince , but also his own works. He is accompanied again by the Golden Symphonic Orchestra , the arrangements are by Wim Bohets. Helmut Lotti recorded the duet LOVE, a composition by Bert Kaempfert , with Clare Teal , who received a BBC Jazz Award as Vocalist of the Year in 2006. The album Time to Swing reached platinum status even before it was released in Belgium.
Return to Flemish hits
After a long musical break, Lotti's new album Mijn hart & mijn started was released in January 2013 , on which he sings in Dutch as in his early years. He composed most of the songs himself and wrote the lyrics in collaboration with the journalist Bart Vanegeren. The album, which reached number 6 in the Flemish charts, was produced by Stef Kamil Carlens.
Charitable commitment
In 1999 Helmut Lotti recorded the single Song for Kosovo with Sandra Kim and Soulsister singer Paul Michiels , the proceeds of which went to the victims of the Kosovo war . In the course of the Levenslijn project, the single Wondere Reis was created in 2000, which was sung by Helmut Lotti, Toots Thielemans , Clouseau singer Koen Wauters and Ingeborg . The proceeds from the single, which sold 30,000 copies, went to asthma research.
Together with 30 other artists, Helmut Lotti recorded the single Geef en teken in 2005 , the proceeds of which went to the flood victims in South Asia. In 2006 Helmut Lotti brought out the single Oaster Iets Scheelt in the Ghent dialect together with the Belgian singers Roland and Sioen , the proceeds of which went to the fight against poverty.
Helmut Lotti has been an ambassador for the goodwill of the UNICEF children's aid organization since 1996 . In this role he has been involved in recent years a. a. in Africa and Russia.

The live recording of the Vienna City Hall concert was released in 1998 under the title "Christmas in Vienna Vol. 5". In July 1998 Helmut Lotti performed a concert by Eros Ramazzotti in Munich , where both sang the title “Musica E”. On the album “Bravo Clouseau”, which was released on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Belgian group Clouseau in 2007, Helmut Lotti can be heard with an interpretation of the band's greatest hit “Daar Gaat Ze” (international title “Close Encounter”).
Helmut Lotti also became a mentor for young artists. In 1998 he discovered Michael Junior as a talent and built him up into a child star . Michael Junior was a guest on Helmut Lotti's tours in the following years and recorded several albums.
Private life
Lotti has been married for the third time since 2009 and has been separated from his last wife since 2017. He and his first wife have a daughter.
In 2009 Lotti publicly stated that he had worn a toupee for years, which "was the decision of the management. Full hair went better with the image. ”Since December 2009, he has done without his toupee at concerts.
Own compositions
Helmut Lotti was mainly known for his cover versions with orchestral accompaniment. Almost every album also contains Helmut Lotti's own compositions, for which he wrote both the text and the melody.

For numerous other tracks on his albums, he contributed either the melody or the lyrics. This is particularly true of the early pop albums up to 1994.
Helmut Lotti wrote the duet "Friends", which he recorded with Michael Junior and which is on his debut album Traumland .
Helmut Lotti composed and wrote the title song “Love Belongs to Everyone” for the Belgian drama film “Dennis van Rita” (international title “Love Belongs to Everyone”), which was released in Belgium in February 2006.
criticism
Helmut Lotti is an artist who polarizes. At the time of the publication of the “Goes Classic” albums, he was often referred to in the press as a star tenor, but at the same time he was denied the associated vocal qualities.
"To reduce the vocal bravura to 'higher, longer, louder' hardly corresponds to an ideal of classical singing art."
In fact, the long-lasting top note became a stylistic device often used in “Goes Classic” recordings, especially at the end of a track, but also in later albums. Looking back, Helmut Lotti, who has a vocal range of 3½ octaves, speaks of a hunt for high notes , which he regards as an attempted long-term suicide .
His voice was often criticized by critics as being unsustainable and he himself was viewed more as a kind of "pop tenor", which Helmut Lotti, who never completed a vocal training, confirmed.
“The great tenors have a classical education and also a classical sound. I, on the other hand, have a pop or maybe a musical voice. I could never sing without a microphone. "
“I'm actually not that enthusiastic about my voice. For me it is on the border between aggressive and nasal. Sometimes I have the feeling that it doesn't sound completely round and full. [...] But obviously that doesn't bother people in the least. Ultimately, it's about conviction, about feeling. "
Typical of Helmut Lotti's interpretations is the accompaniment by the Golden Symphonic Orchestra, which musically implements Wim Bohets' arrangements. The result are titles that range between classic, pop and hit music and have been criticized by the press as being too sentimental or kitschy. At the same time, the same concept for classic titles, traditionals from Africa, Latin America or Russia leads to a distinctive style, but also to a uniformity of the titles, which does not always meet the requirement of always wanting to try something new. Helmut Lotti justifies this with the expectations of his audience, among other things.
“[I] make sure that the repertoire isn't too difficult. My songs have the structure of pop music. It's easier for the audience to understand. Arias are often too difficult. Besides, I don't want to bring classical music closer to people, just the most beautiful melodies. "
