Swinging on a Star is a song composed by Jimmy Van Heusen in 1944 . The text is from Johnny Burke . In the version sung by Bing Crosby , it was used as a movie song in the movie The Road to Happiness . At the Academy Awards in 1945 , the song was awarded an Oscar in the Best Song category.
The version by Bing Crosby became a number one hit in the United States .
The song has been covered many times, including Frank Sinatra , Graham Bonney and The Rattles . Probably the most commercially successful cover version came from Big Dee Irwin & Little Eva in 1963 , which reached number 4 in the UK single charts. The version by Big Dee Irwin and Little Eva was also based on a version that was used from 1987 as the theme song for the TV series My Father is an Alien .
