My father is an alien (original title: Out of This World ) is an American sitcom with science fiction elements, which was filmed from 1987 to 1991.

action

Evie Garland lives with her mother, Donna, in a house in Marlowe, California. She hasn't seen her father Troy since she was a baby. On her thirteenth birthday, she suddenly discovered that she had the ability to "freeze" time and her surroundings. After she manages to thaw her mother, she demands an explanation - and learns that her father Troy is an alien from the planet Antareus. She then receives a cube from him, which serves as a kind of intergalactic telephone and which Evie can use to communicate regularly with her father - usually when there are problems with her Antarean powers, but occasionally the two only talk about everyday things . At first the only one who knows the truth besides Evie and Donna is Evie's greedy but good-natured Uncle Beano. At first Evie is very enthusiastic and uses her powers with joy until her father succeeds in making it clear to her that she shouldn't abuse her powers, which she usually adheres to. However, it is inevitable that she occasionally falls back on her powers when she has problems with which she - like other young people of her age - has to deal with in everyday life, which often backfires. She, her mother and her uncle Beano always find it difficult to explain, especially to the curious, if somewhat simple-minded, Marlower mayor and ex-TV "star" Kyle Applegate, who is practically a permanent guest at the Garland house. Since he likes to use Donna for public events, there are always meetings and meetings in the Garlandhaus, which is why the Garlands get haywire even when Evie is not using her strength. Evie's best friend Lindsay also regularly causes trouble and complicated confusion, who regularly incites Evie to nonsense and is often only out for her own benefit. In the first few episodes, Evie also has to hide her secret from her hyper-intelligent and slightly crazy classmate Quigley Handleman and the silly handyman Phil. In the course of the series, the athlete Chris Fuller moves to Marlowe. When she has to compete against him in a bet, she falls in love with him - later it becomes clear that he also feels affection for her and the two become a couple - even if they often quarrel or go out with others. After a while, Evie gets the ability to “glimpse” in addition to stopping the time. H. it can make people or objects appear out of nowhere. In the pilot episode of the second season, Evie has the opportunity to make a wish - and wishes that not only she, but also her mother (and thus others) can communicate with Troy through the cube. At the beginning of the third season Evie gets the chance to choose another superpower, but ultimately decides against it because she thinks that the powers she has are actually too powerful for the earth. At the beginning of the fourth season, Chris moves to college and faces competition in the form of high school student Jeff Cummings, but Evie ultimately decides for Chris. Nevertheless, she remains friends with Jeff. She also gets support from her Antarean homeland in the form of the clumsy and clumsy Antarean Peter. In order to always be close to her, he takes a job as a waiter in his friends' favorite restaurant, the "Goodie Goodie". Both characters later disappear from the series. During the fourth season Evie's other uncle Michael (nicknamed Mick), a rock musician, moves back to Marlowe after many years. He too knows about Evie's powers. In return, Uncle Beano rarely appeared. In the finale of the fourth season, the series finale, which takes place on Evie's 18th birthday, Troy finally visits the earth and his daughter after years. When it tries to return, Donna is accidentally teleported to Antareus instead of him. That ended the series. Possibly this was planned as a cliffhanger to a never-released 5th season. In addition to the two main powers, Evie also receives additional powers in individual episodes, such as mind reading, seeing into the future or making herself invisible.

Characters

  • Evie Ethel Garland: main character.
  • Donna Garland: Evie's mother. She often treats her daughter like a small child or denies her wishes, which is why she is also the trigger for the use of her powers. At first she is the principal at Evie's school, later she runs her party service. Towards the end of the third season, she wins the election for mayor, replacing Kyle.
  • Beano Froelich: Evie's uncle. He's very fat and he's always hungry. On earth he's a kind of father substitute for Evie. Contrary to his own eating habits, he runs a diet clinic and later a fitness studio. Towards the end of the series, he tries his hand at an inventor.
  • Kyle Applegate: The Mayor of Marlowe and former western actor and protagonist of the series "Mosquito Man". He is quite conceited and in love with himself and often a witness of Evie's powers, but he always manages to hide them from him. In the fourth season he is beaten by Donna in the mayoral election and is then police chief.
  • Lindsay Selkirk: Evie's best friend. She is a bit conceited and often looking for her own advantage when it really matters, but also a good friend and quasi Evie's advisor in life and love matters.
  • Chris Fuller: Evie's great love. Although the two of them get into each other's wool from time to time and often make affairs, they basically love each other throughout the series.
  • Buzz: A Marlowe resident who keeps doing new jobs and who seems a little crazy at all. He usually does not really advance the action of the consequences, but rather is to be seen as a kind of "gag supplier".
  • Troy Garland: Evie's father. Although he's an alien, he's basically very human in his way of thinking. He helps Evie with her problems - both extraterrestrial and mundane. A kind of "running gag" is that whenever Evie expects he would prevail against her mum and stand by her, he mostly takes Donna's side.
  • Phil: A craftsman who takes care of repairs in the Garland house and is always there.
  • Quigley Handleman: Highly intelligent classmate of Evie and slightly crazy.
  • Jeffrey Cummings: Newcomer to Marlowe and in love with Evie. Later the two are good friends.
  • Peter: Waiter in the "Goodie Goodie" who also works as a craftsman. It is later revealed that he is an Antarean and was sent by Troy to protect Evie in an emergency. After completing his assignment, he decides to stay, but has to lose his memories. He is extremely clumsy and clumsy.
  • Mick: Evie's uncle, a rock musician who traveled the world for a long time and is now returning to Marlowe. He helps Evie in many situations.

background

  • The original voice of the alien father Troy was spoken by Burt Reynolds ; in the German version, Norbert Gescher took over the role.
  • Steve Burton , who played Chris Fuller, later had a role in the science fiction series Taken , which is about a girl whose great-grandfather was an alien. This girl's skills were reminiscent of Evie's in many ways (e.g. stopping time)
  • During the second season, Donna Pescow became pregnant. Since this could not be explained from the plot, she was only taken close-up pictures during this time or she was covered by objects.
  • Public laughter was used in the original English version, which was largely omitted in the German dubbing .
  • Each season had a different opening credits. Each one has kept the scene where Evie opens the door and accidentally knocks over a bucket of white paint, which is why she stops time before the fall. There were two different versions of the scene; the first was only used in the first season, the second in the remainder.
  • When Evie stops time, in some scenes you can see the actors concentrating on not moving. Some people cannot do this 100 percent. This is especially evident in the pilot episode, during Evie's birthday.
