Roland Van Campenhout (also known as Roland for short ; * 1945 in Boom ) is a Belgian blues musician.

Life

Roland Van Campenhout was born the son of a saxophone player and jazz musician in Boom in Flanders . The father died when he was five years old. In his youth he was mainly influenced by Jack Kerouac's novel On The Road , in which jazz plays a central role. He taught himself to play the guitar and founded the skiffle group "William & Roland Skiffle Group". In 1967 Roland released the single Je Kan Nooit Weten with the folk duo "Miek & Roel" . From 1969 he turned to the blues and had his breakthrough as a musician at the Jazz-Bilsen Festival in 1969. In the 1970s he became a member of Rory Gallagher's band , with whom he performed around the world. He also went on tours with his own band "Bluesworkshop", which included keyboardist André Brasseur in the 1970s , which took him to Singapore. He played with Tim Hardin , Leo Kottke and Ian Anderson in the following years , but only had his first commercial success with the pop-heavy album 79 cm Per Second , which was released in 1985 and contained hits like Fish on the Hook and Cruising Down On Main Street .

Roland Van Campenhout worked with rock musician Arno Hintjens on his album Charles et les Lulus , which was released in 1991 and made Roland known to an audience outside the blues scene. Two years later he appeared as a producer for Pieter-Jan De Smet's album Antidote and wrote the soundtrack for Marc Diddens film Mannen maken plannen . In addition to his own publications, the following years were also characterized by collaborations with other artists. In 2000 he played with the folk singer Wannes Van De Velde and the following year with the blues group "El Fish", with whom he also recorded an album in the same year. In 2006 the single Oaster Iets Scheelt followed , which Roland Van Campenhout recorded together with Sioen and Helmut Lotti and the proceeds of which went to the fight against poverty.

Roland Van Campenhout is now considered one of the best blues musicians in Belgium. On his albums he experiments with oriental and African sounds ( The Last Tribe ), sometimes plays instrumental albums ( Snowblind ) and mixes his own tracks with cover versions. In addition to folk and blues, his albums also contain echoes of country music, rock'n'roll, R'n'B and world music. His 2008 album Never Enough , which is considered the musician's best album to date, reached number 2 in the Flemish charts and is therefore the most successful album in Roland Van Campenhout's career to date.
