history
Rattenberg lies between Fels and Inn at the foot of a castle from the 10th century. In the past, the city served as a transshipment point for goods from the Inn shipping and as a customs office on the border between Tyrol and Bavaria . The historic center is built in the Inn-Salzach style and is now a pedestrian zone.
Rattenberg was first mentioned in documents in 1254. In 1393 it was elevated to the status of a Bavarian city. Under the protection of the castle, the place developed along the road between the Inn and the Stadtberg. A wall and a moat in the east closed off the place. The south-tyrolean street leading east forms the center as a kind of town square. After floods, the place was raised several times.
Like the rest of Tyrol east of the Ziller ( Zillertal ), Rattenberg belongs to the Archdiocese of Salzburg . Rattenberg was politically part of Bavaria until the Landshut War of Succession . In 1505, Maximilian I secured the possession of the cities of Rattenberg, Kufstein and Kitzbühel and their surroundings, which formerly belonged to Bavaria-Ingolstadt and then to Bavaria-Landshut , by negotiation with the Cologne arbitration award, which ended the war . Until the 19th century, however, the land law of Emperor Ludwig of Bavaria still applied in these areas. In 1514, the Bavarian Duke Wilhelm IV and his younger brother were inherited in Rattenberg .
In 2013 the urban area was placed under ensemble protection ( monument protection ). This makes Rattenberg the second town ensemble in Tyrol after Hall and the 30th in Austria.

Culture and sights
Buildings
Here the type of the Inn-Salzach city is still particularly well preserved.
- Parish church hl. Virgil
- In the former Augustinian - monastery that is Augustinian Museum housed the ecclesiastical exhibits from the Lower Tyrol shows.
- Notburga's birthplace
- There is a handicraft museum in the nail smiths' houses , which have existed since 1148 and are therefore among the oldest houses in the town.

Schlossberg shadow
Rattenberg is so located on the adjacent Schlossberg that part of the city is in the shade for about three months in winter . The Bartenbach Light Academy has developed a concept whereby the part of the old town should be supplied with daylight via two mirrors. A self-tracking heliostat with 200 m² was planned on the sunny side of the place , several fixed mirrors with 400 m² area on the Schlossberg side - the project was not implemented.
Economy and Infrastructure
Rattenberg is known today for its glass processing companies and is therefore called "Glass City". The most important branch of the economy is day tourism. In summer, around 3,000 guests visit the city, which only has one hotel, every day by coach and private car. Almost the whole city is a pedestrian zone .
There is no post office and no police inspection in the city, but there is the District Court of Rattenberg, which is responsible for the twelve communities in the judicial district of Rattenberg .
Due to the constriction of the building area, which makes up only about half of the city area, several infrastructure facilities are outside the city limits: u. a. Kindergarten, fire brigade, cemetery, sports field, building yard, recycling yard, train stop and several large parking spaces. All 93 usable buildings in the city are numbered consecutively in a total of seven named streets (from 1–87 and 89–94).
traffic
- Rattenberg can be reached via the Inntal Autobahn A 12 with the Kramsach exit (exit 32). Before the completion of the motorway, all traffic ran through the city until August 4, 1972. The Tiroler Straße B 171 was only passed through the Rattenberg Tunnel (624 m) decades later and has since completely relieved the city of through traffic.
- The Unterinntalbahn , which runs under Rattenberg in the tunnel, serves the city with the Rattenberg-Kramsach stop of the S-Bahn Tirol .
The RTT radio beacon for an international air route is located near the city .
