history
Scheffau literally means “the crooked Au”. In the Middle Ages, a wet meadow was referred to as a meadow and later a green area.
Scheffau is in a traditional note of Baumburg Abbey from the years 1157-1164 ersturkundlich as "Scefenǒwen" mentioned. Smaller raw settlements of Bavarians go back to the 9th century.
Until 1504 Scheffau belonged politically to the Duchy of Bavaria . Only after the end of the War of the Bavarian Succession was the municipal area with the courts of Kufstein , Rattenberg and Kitzbühel united with Tyrol. At the beginning of the 19th century, a political community was formed under Bavarian administration . In 1865 the community of Scheffau finally became independent.
coat of arms
The municipal coat of arms, awarded in 1972, shows "In silver over a green left angular foot a black-tongued, gold-reinforced black eagle's head". The left angled foot in green symbolizes the gently sloping terrain, the crooked meadow. The eagle points to the rugged Kaiser Mountains, where they live again today. The colors green and gray are also the colors of the Scheffau flag.
