The Scheffauer is a 2111  m above sea level. A. high mountain in the Kaiser Mountains in the Northern Limestone Alps . It forms the western cornerstone of the Wilder Kaiser and is one of the most popular peaks in the Kaiser Mountains.

location

The Scheffauer is one of the lower peaks in the Wilder Kaiser and closes the main ridge of this mountain range in the west. To the south and north it plunges with mighty rock walls up to 600 meters high. At the southern foot of the Scheffauer lies the Hintersteiner See , to the west is the rarely visited Zettenkaiser , while in the ridge that extends to the east, the Hackenköpf follows. A worthwhile but difficult tour leads over this ridge to the Sonneck . The summit belongs to the municipality of Scheffau am Wilden Kaiser , with the border to the Kufstein municipality running directly at the summit cross .

Routes

There are two popular routes on the Scheffauer, both are marked and adequately secured.

  • from the south: The normal route begins at Scheffau am Wilden Kaiser and leads from Gasthaus Bärnstatt over the Steiner-Hochalm, a wide scree field and the rugged southern flank, steep and sunny, and exposed in places in the upper part (several places difficulty level I, two rocky passages with wire rope insured and defused with a few iron stirrups in the area of the so-called "water hole") to the summit cross . Surefootedness and a head for heights required. Walking time: 3.5 hours.
  • from the north: The starting point for this route is the private Kaindlhütte on the Steinbergalm. From there it goes first on a mountain path to the "large cemetery" and in the upper part over the Widauersteig (secured via ferrata , difficulty level A / B) through the shady north flank largely over rocky terrain to the summit, more demanding than the south route, surefootedness and a head for heights required . Walking time from Kaindlhütte: 2.5 hours.
