The legend about the Hintersteiner See

In Hinterstein lived high-spirited, rich farmers who pushed cones with lumps of butter on their lush home pasture, that was the area where the Hintersteiner See is today . It was a moonlit night when they played again. Suddenly the ground swayed under their feet, and they sank, house and yard, into the depths. The peasants, however, have been banished up to the Scheffauerspitze for their iniquity and have to play skittles there as a punishment while the emperor is standing. This cone place is located a little below the top of the Scheffauer in a small rock basin covered with a fine moss carpet.

According to the story, the wealthy Hintersteiner farmers had a heated argument over a source. Even on the high feast of Corpus Christi they argued all day, and in the end there was even a fight. When the next day early in the morning the dairymaid of the farmers, a righteous, pious thing who had long been repugnant to quarrel, went to the home pasture to milk, she saw a small pool of water in front of the house where there had never been one before. She noticed her shaking her head, but kept walking. After a long search she found the cows which, to her amazement, were lying close together in a hollow. She milked them quickly so that she would soon be back in the yard, when she saw only the roof of a single house sticking out of the water from the upper edge of the depression.
