The Hackenköpfe are a series of peaks in the western Kaiser Mountains in Austria. Their maximum height is 2125  m above sea level. A.

location

You are in the mountain ridge between Treffauer and Scheffauer that runs west from the Sonneck . The western Hackenkopf has a height of 2092  m above sea level. A. on, the Middle Hackenkopf comes to 2119  m above sea level. A. and the Eastern Hackenkopf is at 2125  m above sea level. A. the highest peak in the group. All peaks belong to the municipality of Kufstein .

Geology, fauna and flora

The hoe heads consist primarily of limestone. To the north they drop in rock faces up to 800 m high towards the Kaisertal, to the south in rugged, steep, sometimes grassy and in places rugged rock faces. The ridge is interspersed with rocks and also has numerous grassy spots. In addition to extremely narrow ridge sections, there are also larger, grassy hollows and cuts. Chamois live in particular in the transition to the Wiesberg .

Routes

Most often they are climbed either over the ridge of the Sonneck or the ridge of the Scheffauer. As a rule, the inspection takes place from west to east, i.e. H. from the Scheffauer, as the more difficult passages are on the ascent.

The normal route includes numerous climbing passages with up to difficulty II according to UIAA and sometimes longer sections with path tracks and is not secured; Marked in places with stone men and in sections with red dots. Many exposed sections, the ridge to be walked is sometimes extremely narrow. The western Hackenkopf can only be reached by climbing at difficulty level II, the other two peaks can also be climbed from the east at difficulty level I. The two most difficult places from west to east are the wall step (hook with ribbon loop) at the end of the path that leads from the Widerauersteig towards the western Hackenkopf, and the chimney-like channel in front of the Mittlere Hackenkopf. Surefootedness, a head for heights, climbing skills and a good sense of direction are required in any case.

The entry from the west begins with a trail on the north side about 20 meters down from the saddle at the beginning of the Widauersteiges; from the east the entry begins where the marked mountain trail from the Kaiserhochalm to Kopfkraxn / Sonneck reaches the ridge of the Wiesberg. The popular but demanding crossing of the ridge from Scheffauer to Sonneck, starting in Scheffau am Wilden Kaiser , leads over all three Hackenkopf, whereby the Eastern Hackenkopf can also be bypassed.

The most difficult places are from west to east the vertical rock face behind the notch after the end of the path from the entrance (there a normal hook makes the ascent easier, II +, most difficult point of the entire crossing). A little further on, the ridge to the Mittlerer Hackenkopf becomes very narrow (pointed rock cutting edge), before it is briefly climbed to the right (II-) and below it is crossed on the west side (two normal hooks). Very exposed, narrow rocky ridge in front of the summit structure of the Mittlerer Hackenkopf, then on the summit structure itself a well-stepped chimney-like rock channel (often wet, II). In front of the Eastern Hackenkopf there is a short climbing point (II), which can also be bypassed to the east. After the eastern Hackenkopf a sloping east-side very exposed traverse on a ledge (very narrow, I). The traverse of a smooth, sloping rock slab (I) then follows.

The walking distance / climbing length is over three kilometers (Scheffauer to Sonneck), the time required is three to four hours. The tour is not recommended when it is wet.
