The Traunstein – Ruhpolding railroad is a single-track, electrified, 13.206-kilometer-long line on the Südostbayernbahn between Traunstein and Ruhpolding . Regional trains operated by DB Regio AG run on it . The route has been operated at approximately hourly intervals since 1996.

The local railway Traunstein – Ruhpolding is a remnant of the idea originally developed around 1880 to build a main line from Traunstein via Ruhpolding and Reit im Winkl , there crossing the Bavarian-Austrian border, to Kössen and Kufstein .

However, such a railway construction was already highly controversial at that time: On the one hand, there was a strong competitive spirit between the supporters of the railway line “Traunstein – Ruhpolding – Reit i. W. "with the proponents of a route" Übersee – Marquartstein "with the option of an extension to Reit i. W .; on the other hand, the state government of Bavaria at that time already described the construction of main railways as an idea that could not be pursued further, so Bavaria only needed the so-called secondary or local railways. The petition is therefore also rejected by the Bavarian state government.

A few years later the construction of a shortened line from Traunstein to Ruhpolding started and after almost a decade it was realized.

The opening took place on August 17, 1895 and connected Ruhpolding to the main route from Rosenheim to Salzburg . In the first few years the route was driven by a class D VII locomotive . Between 1933 and 1945, Ruhpolding was the terminus of KdF special trains. The line has been electrified since November 3, 1955. Electric multiple units of the class 425 , later 426, have been in use since March 2002 . With around 1500 travelers per day, it is one of the more heavily frequented secondary routes.

With the commissioning of the narrow-gauge state forest railway Ruhpolding – Reit im Winkl in 1922 , the normal-gauge line was extended by around 400 meters to Ruhpolding forest station. Among other things, two trolley pits were available there.

The Free State of Bavaria has been ordering an hourly service between Traunstein and Ruhpolding since 1996, for which DB Regio Bayern has been using an electric multiple unit of the 425 series since March 2002 , which offers 200 seats. With around 1,500 passengers per day, the Ruhpolding Railway was one of the busier branch lines in southern Upper Bavaria at that time.

Since 2001, all tracks and stations between Traunstein and Ruhpolding belong to the regional network of the Südostbayernbahn. The modernization work had already started beforehand, including the installation of a section block in Siegsdorf train station and the renewal of switches and tracks with Y-steel sleepers. The smaller Seiboldsdorf, Traundorf and Höpfling stations were also renovated, as was the Ruhpolding train station. The railway and municipality invested almost two million euros in a new, barrier-free platform and parking facilities for bicycles as well as new parking spaces. A new stopping point was opened in 2005 to the east of the district of Bibelöd in Ruhpolding.

In 2011, platform 1a in the Traunstein train station, which previously had a height of twenty centimeters, was made barrier-free as a combination platform . The Eisenärzt and Seiboldsdorf stops received new platforms with a length of 100 meters and a height of 55 centimeters in 2018 , with the latter being moved 500 meters north to the footbridge over the Traun. The platform in Bibelöd was extended to 100 meters.

Series 628 diesel multiple units operated from November 2019 to June 5, 2020, as the class 426 electric multiple units were decommissioned by the Federal Railway Authority.

From December 11, 2022, the route will be served by the Bavarian Oberlandbahn. Two three-part Flirt 3 will be used.

Regional trains of the Südostbayernbahn run every hour between Traunstein and Ruhpolding. They cover the distance in 22-26 minutes and serve all stations, although in Seiboldsdorf, Traundorf, Höpfling and Bibelöd stopping only when necessary.

Special trains run on the route for the Traunstein city festival and during the Biathlon World Cup in Ruhpolding. There are also occasional special trains from Mühldorf am Inn , for example the Narrenexpress on January 26, 2008.

Freight traffic has been suspended for many years.
