The locomotives of type D VII were wet steam locomotives of the Bavarian State Railways . They carried coal and water supplies in side containers.

In parallel to the D VI class , the D VII was designed as a triple-coupled locomotive for steep inclines. A total of 75 units were built, 41 of which were from Krauss and 34 from Maffei. From 1885 onwards, the locomotives were slightly longer, had larger stocks and therefore also had a larger mass.

Two machines were used on the Langenbach – Enzelhausen railway line . They were stationed in Mainburg , soon proved to be too weak and were replaced by D XI around 1898 . One machine, later the 98 7611, had been in use on the Sulztalbahn since 1887 . The use of D VII series machines was also recorded on the route from Senden to Weißenhorn in 1902. Others were stationed in Selb .

In 1925, the Deutsche Reichsbahn took over all 75 locomotives as class 98 76 . Most were retired by the late 1920s, but the last wasn't until 1935.

The 98 7601 and 98 7639 remained as towing machines in the Würzburg depot and in the Nürnberg Hbf depot until 1960.

One example, the D VII 1854 - later 98 7658, built by Krauss in 1892 - was erected as a memorial at the Tengelmann wholesale market in Wiesbaden and is now in the Localbahnmuseum Bayerisch Eisenstein of the Bavarian Localbahnverein .
