He finished eleventh in the sprint. After further good World Cup results, he finished the 1998/99 season as the most successful of his career in 20th place in the overall World Cup standings. After a rather declining performance in the following years, he started in 2001 in the B World Cup, but was then able to place back in the World Cup squad. At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , he reached 6th place with the team. In individual on the normal hill Bal place went to ten, 18th on the large hill place in the 2002/03 season Bal was able to find old services again and reached in the Sprint Cup standings to 21th Place. After that, he was still regularly placed in the points, but he could no longer achieve his old performance. At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , he finished fifth in the team competition with François Braud , Ludovic Roux and Jason Lamy Chappuis . In the sprint, Bal reached place 27, in Gundersen place 31st. After another season, Bal ended his active career in 2007.
