Martin Tauber (born November 4, 1976 in Innsbruck ) is a former Austrian cross-country skier and Olympic participant .

Career

The trained carpenter and current sports soldier in the Austrian Armed Forces grew up in the municipality of Seefeld in Tyrol . His house was right on a cross-country ski run , which made the sport seem to have been born into him, so to speak. At the age of 17 he started the World Cup in 1993. Due to several viral diseases, the Tyrolean , who starts for SC Seefeld, was repeatedly thrown back in his running development. After he believed that he could no longer develop in Austria , Tauber went to Sweden for a short time and even thought of changing his citizenship. In the meantime, however, the athlete has returned to his home country and in recent years, although the ÖSV has suggested that he resign from active top-class sport, he has even caught up with the local top in cross-country skiing .

Internationally, the four-time Austrian national champion made people sit up and take notice for the first time in the Oberstdorf double pursuit in January 2006 when he finished fourth. Shortly afterwards, Tauber confirmed his performance with his first podium place in a World Cup competition with second place over 15 km classic in Davos . After these achievements, the 1.75 m tall Seefelder was even traded as a hope for a medal at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin. In the double pursuit over 30 km, however, Tauber was immediately involved in a mass fall, but was still able to catch up with the leading group despite a broken stick. In the end, however, the Tyrolean lacked the strength to be able to take action and he finally finished 17th overall. Things went better for him in his second classic 15 km race, in which he was able to take an excellent eighth place.

Martin Tauber was also the starting runner in the 4x10 km relay. Due to the illness of the two top Austrian cross-country skiers Christian Hoffmann and Michail Botwinow , there was no chance of a medal in this competition from the start. Due to a doping control in the middle of the night only a few hours before the start with massive efforts by the Italian police, the Austrian athletes were torn from their preparation to such an extent that they were only the last to run after the field in the relay competition and were finally even taken out of the competition because they were lapped had to. According to the Turin public prosecutor's office, the series of measurements found at Tauber (59 measurements from February 10th to 19th) of the hemoglobin measuring device, which he also owned, showed blood values above the permissible threshold, which fell suddenly into the permitted range immediately before the start of the race . Used and unused infusion sets and butterfly needles were also seized from Tauber .

In April 2007 Tauber, his cross-country skiing colleagues Johannes Eder , Jürgen Pinter and Roland Diethart as well as two Austrian biathletes were excluded from the Olympic Games for life by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In the opinion of the IOC, all were considered convicted of having jointly used doping substances. Reason for the severe penalty: "These cases go beyond the simple possession of prohibited substances and methods, and are clear examples in which a network, including athletes, came together to manipulate blood and engage in doping practices." Your Turin results have been canceled. According to the findings of the ÖSV Disciplinary Commission, Tauber owned numerous medical equipment and series of measurements that can be used for blood doping , but this is not enough to accuse him of using a prohibited method. In the appeal to the CAS , the bans for Pinter, Eder and Tauber were confirmed on January 4, 2008. Diethart's exclusion was shortened up to and including the 2010 Olympic Games.

Since 2008 he has been a partner in a ski school in Seefeld iT
