Bogataj started his career in 2001 in the Continental Cup . His best result in the Continental Cup was three wins. At the Junior World Championship in 2003 in Sollefteå , he finished 14th in the individual and second in the team. The first World Cup competition took place in the 2004 season in Liberec with 33rd place. He won bronze with the team at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2005 in Oberstdorf , and finished 40th on the normal hill. On the large hill he reached 4th place with the team and 28th place in the individual. At the Winter Universiade 2007 in Pragelato he took 8th place in the individual and team on the normal hill and 28th place on the large hill. Bogataj only jumps in the Continental Cup. In the 2009/10 season he jumped three competitions in the FIS Cup and his best result was a third place in Harrachov . In the summer of 2011, Bogataj ended his active ski jumping career.
