Ron Spanuth (born March 25, 1980 ) is a former German cross-country skier . He grew up in Ruhla, Thuringia .

Career

Spanuth, who trained at TSG Ruhla , began ski jumping at a young age, but gave up after several jumps in adolescence. At the national ski games in Lauscha in 1993 he started cross-country skiing and came third. The following year he won in Reit im Winkl . Because of this success, Spanuth moved to the Oberhof sports high school .

At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 1997 in Canmore , he started internationally for the first time. He reached 10th place over 10 km in classic style. In the following year at the Junior World Championships in Pontresina in 1998 , Spanuth narrowly missed his first medal as fourth over 10 km in free style. Over 30 km in the classic style, he landed 15th. After having started in the Alpine Cup in the meantime, he started again in the Junior World Championships in 1999 . However, in the individual competitions in Saalfelden am Steinernen Meer , he was unable to build on his achievements from the previous year, but became world champion with the German cross-country relay.

On February 27, 1999, Spanuth made his debut in the Cross-Country Continental Cup . Surprisingly, he immediately landed second on the podium in Pokljuka . At the beginning of the 1999/2000 season he achieved his first victory in Goms. Two weeks later, on December 27, 1999, he made his debut in the cross-country world cup in Engelberg . However, neither there nor in Garmisch-Partenkirchen could he run to the top of the world the following day.

At the Junior World Championships in 2000 in Štrbské Pleso , he won the title and thus gold in the individual over 10 km. He finished fifth over 30 km in classic style and fourth with the German relay over 4 × 10 kilometers. In February 2000 in Ulrichen he just missed the points as 33rd.

In December 2000 Spanuth achieved another podium in the Continental Cup in Campra . Only a little later in January 2001, he just missed his first World Cup podium in fourth in Soldier Hollow . Together with Jens Filbrich , Andreas Schlütter and René Sommerfeldt , he was able to take third place in the relay at the 2001 Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti . The team only succeeded in winning this medal through the disqualification of the Finnish team for doping . In the individual disciplines he missed a run in the world elite. He was 25th in the 20 km pursuit before reaching 18th place in the individual over 50 km.

In March 2001 he won again World Cup points in Falun and Kuopio and finished the season in 61st place overall.

At the age of 22 he retired from competitive sports in order to be more there for the family. Shortly before, he had met his new partner from Berlin while on vacation in Turkey.
