Marc Mayer (born July 18, 1978 in Altenmarkt im Pongau ) is a former Austrian cross-country skier .

Career

Mayer, who started for the SK Radstadt, ran in Ramsau am Dachstein for the first time in the World Cup in January 1998 and achieved 74th place over 15 km classic. In the same month he finished 46th over 30 km classic at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in Pontresina in 1998 . In the 1998/99 season he got his first top ten placements at sprint world cups with places ten and ninth and achieved his best individual placement in the world cup with fourth place in the sprint in Kitzbühel . At the end of the season, he achieved 23rd place in the Sprint World Cup. In March 1999 he took second place over 10 km classic in Sapporo, his only podium in the Continental Cup . In the 1999/2000 World Cup season he came in five times in the World Cup, four times in the points. At the Austrian Championships in 2000 he won the team sprint together with Wolfgang Rottmann and took second place in the sprint. The following year he won 15th place in the sprint at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2001 in Lahti . His best season placement in the World Cup was 15th place in the sprint in Nové Město . At the Austrian Championships in 2001 he was third in the sprint and champion together with Thomas Stöggl in the team sprint.

In the 2001/02 World Cup season , Mayer reached eighth and tenth place in the sprint and finished fourth in Nove Mesto with the Austrian relay. He reached the 15th place in the Sprint World Cup. At the Austrian Championships in 2002 he was second in the sprint. In February 2002 he took part in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City . However, he was subsequently disqualified for doping in May 2003 and banned by the FIS for two years after blood bags were found in the Austrian accommodation. All of his results from the 2002 Winter Olympics and the subsequent 2002/03 season were deleted. Only his championship title over 30 km at the Austrian championships in 2003 remained with him. Mayer then appealed against the ban before the International Sports Court (CAS) . The CAS contradicted the decision of the FIS and Mayer was entitled to start again at the beginning of the 2003/04 season. He then started again in the World Cup, but could not win any more World Cup points until the end of his career after the 2004/05 season.

Marc Mayer is the son of the former cross-country skier and trainer Walter Mayer .
