Tschernych ran his first World Cup race in Kiruna in November 1994 , which he finished classically in 70th place over 10 km. In the 1995/96 season he got his first World Cup points in Nové Město with the 29th place over 15 km classic. He was also in Lahti second in the relay and reached in Oslo km with the 15th place over 50 classic his best individual placing in the World Cup. He finished the season in 45th place in the overall World Cup and achieved his best overall result. In 1996 he became the Russian champion over 30 km. At the 1997 World Championships in Trondheim , he finished 35th over 50 km classic, 17th over 30 km freestyle and, together with Sergei Tschepikow , Maxim Pitschugin and Alexei Prokurorow, fourth place with the relay. He completed his 29th and last individual World Cup race in December 1997 in Davos , which he finished classically in 88th place over 30 km.
