Johann Gottfried Rudolf von Schadow-Godenhaus (born September 3, 1826 in Berlin , † March 9, 1890 in Darmstadt ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

His parents were Wilhelm von Schadow (born September 6, 1789, † March 19, 1862) and his wife Charlotte, née Groschke. His father was the director of the Art Academy in Düsseldorf, his mother a daughter of the court doctor Johann Gottlieb von Groschke (1760-1828).

Career

First he attended a grammar school in Düsseldorf , later he received private lessons in Cologne . After graduating, he joined the Guards Artillery Brigade as a gunner on January 1, 1843. From October 1, 1843 to July 7, 1846 he was posted to the United Artillery and Engineering School . In this he was promoted to Portepeefähnrich on June 1, 1844 and after his return on August 11, 1846 aggregated as a second lieutenant ; on January 14, 1847 he came to the 7th Uhlan Regiment. He took part in the Baden campaign in 1849 . He fought in the battles at Kirchheimbolanden, Ubstadt, Durlach and Kuppenheim. He resigned at his own request on September 9, 1851 with a legal reservation. He entered on February 7, 1852 in the III. Battalion of the 8th Landwehr Regiment. On March 8, 1855, he transferred to the 7th Landwehr Hussar Regiment on August 11, 1847. From March 1, 1856 to October 10, 1856 he was deployed as a squadron leader . He was promoted to Prime Lieutenant on April 12, 1859 and Rittmeister on June 30, 1859. From August 28, 1859 to May 31, 1860 he was the leader of the regiment's replacement squadron. He was then appointed squadron chief on August 13, 1861 and on August 18, 1865 he was transferred to the General Command of the VIII Army Corps .

During the German War of 1866 he was adjutant of the Elbarmee and fought near Münchengrätz and Königgrätz . For this he received the Order of the Red Eagle, 4th class with swords, on September 20, 1866 .

He rose to major on November 16, 1867 and joined the 2nd Uhlan Regiment on June 18, 1869 as a regular staff officer. As such, he took part in the Franco-German War . He fought at Beaumont , Sedan , Orleans , Beaugency-Cravant and Le Mans as well as the siege of Paris . For this he received the Iron Cross 2nd Class on December 18, 1870 .

After the war, on December 12, 1872, he was given the command of the 15th Hussar Regiment and was placed à la suite of the regiment. He rose to lieutenant colonel on March 22, 1873, was confirmed as commander on April 15, 1873 and promoted to colonel on July 5, 1875. On September 16, 1881 he received the Crown Order, 2nd class. On October 18, 1881 he was promoted to major general and transferred to the 7th Cavalry Brigade as commander. On September 17, 1883, he received the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves and swords on the ring. On June 12, 1886 he was given the character of Lieutenant General and was put up for disposal with a pension . He died on March 9, 1890 in Darmstadt.

He married Magdalena Sophie Johanna Wesselhoeft (April 20, 1850 - June 17, 1890) in Hamburg on March 9, 1875, a daughter of the businessman Karl Johannes Wesselhoeft (1816–1903) and Maria Theresa, née Chamot (1823–1908) ). The marriage was childless.
