Werner Geeser

Werner Geeser (born February 16, 1948 in Arosa ; † September 9, 2011 there ) was a Swiss cross-country skier who took part in competitions in the 1960s and 1970s.

Career

At the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo , he surprisingly achieved sixth place over the 50-kilometer distance after leading the field up to 45 kilometers. Finally, half a minute was missing for the bronze medal. Over 30 km it had only reached rank 41. In 1970 Geeser also became Swiss champion in the 15-kilometer run, world champion in the military winter triathlon (cross-country skiing, giant slalom and shooting competition ) and winner of the Engadin ski marathon . In 1971 the versatile athlete won both the single run with shooting, the triathlon combination and double gold with the team at the military world championships in Sterzing . In 1974 he achieved further podium places at the Swiss Championships and the Engadin Ski Marathon.

After his active career, Werner Geeser and his brother Reto owned a cross-country ski school in Maran / Arosa.

Werner Geeser suffered a stroke years ago , but eventually succumbed to an incurable lung cancer .
