Josef "Sepp" Zehnder (born March 25, 1944 ) is a former Swiss ski jumper .

Career

At the Swiss championships in Einsiedeln in 1963, Zehnder won the bronze medal in the individual on the normal hill behind Heribert Schmid and Heini Moser .

Despite poor performance in the following Four Hills Tournament in 1963/64 , in which Zehnder started internationally for the first time, but did not get above 55th overall, he started at the Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck in 1964 at the age of 19 . However, as 51st on the normal and 48th on the large hill, he did not make a breakthrough.

Zehnder jumped to the top of the world for the first time in the Four Hills Tournament in 1965/66 , in which he came 21st on the Great Olympic Hill in Garmisch-Partenkirchen .

In the Nordic World Ski Championships 1966 in Norway Oslo Zehnder jumped on the large hill at 73 and 75.5 meters and finished in 27th place. From the normal hill he reached 70.5 and 69.5 meters and thus finished 34th together with Toralf Engan .

He won his first Swiss championship title at the Swiss Championships in Lenk in 1968 . At the following Olympic Winter Games in Grenoble in 1968 , Zehnder jumped from the normal hill to rank 52 and from the large hill to rank 47.

After Zehnder jumped into the top 20 for the first time in the Four Hills Tournament in 1968/69 with 20th place overall and in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 16th place for the first time, he won his second individual title at the Swiss Championships in 1970.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1970 in Štrbské Pleso , Zehnder jumped from the large hill to 90.5 and 99 meters and thus took a very good 14th place. From the normal hill he came to 79.5 and 80 meters and finished 10th. At the Swiss championships in 1971, Zehnder finally won his third and last Swiss championship title.

At the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo , he achieved his best Olympic results as 28th on the normal hill and 22nd on the large hill. At the following ski flying world championship in Planica in 1972 , Zehnder flew to 33rd place. The following Four Hills Tournament in 1972/73 was the most successful for Zehnder. On the Schattenbergschanze in Oberstdorf he jumped 18th among the best 20. He also landed in the top 20 in Innsbruck and Bischofshofen . In the overall ranking he reached the 16th place with 801.9 points.

On his last Four Hills Tournament in 1973/74 he missed the repetition of his great successes. After weak individual performances, he only achieved 62nd place overall.

In December 1974 his son Josef was born, who later also achieved international success as a ski jumper.
