James Jay "Jim" Denney (born June 10, 1957 in Duluth , Minnesota ) is a former American ski jumper .

Career

Denney, who started for the Duluth XC Ski Club , made his international debut at the Four Hills Tournament 1974/75 . After the 66th place on the Paul-Ausserleitner-Schanze in Bischofshofen was his best individual result, he finished the tour in 72nd place in the overall ranking. In the Four Hills Tournament 1975/76 he was able to increase his performance minimally, but again did not reach a top 50 placement. He finished the tour with 655.3 points in 57th place overall.

Denney celebrated his first success at the US championships in 1976, where he clearly won the individual title. Shortly afterwards, he started at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck . After a 21st place on the normal hill, he reached 18th place on the large hill.

In the Four Hills Tournament 1976/77 he was able to show better jumps again compared to the previous season and finished the tour in 32nd place. Denney repeated this placement at the Four Hills Tournament in 1977/78 .

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1978 he reached 14th place on the normal hill. In the same year he won jumping in Lahti . At the Four Hills Tournament 1978/79 Denney achieved a further increase in performance. In Garmisch-Partenkirchen , for example, he achieved a top 10 position for the first time in eighth place. It was also the best single placement in his career. He finished his most successful tour in 23rd place overall. A year later at the Four Hills Tournament 1979/80 Denney made his debut in the ski jumping World Cup . However, he could not convince in his first World Cup jumping and therefore only stayed in the World Cup squad for the tour, which he completed with 470.2 points as 64th.

At the US Championships in 1980 he repeated his title from 1976 and then competed again at the Olympic Games. At the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid , he came in 36th when jumping on the normal hill. In the end, he was in a very good eighth place on the large hill.

Private

Denney studied tax and economics at the University of Minnesota at Duluth and graduated successfully. He is the father of the eponymous Jim Denney , who was also active as a ski jumper. In 2008 he was inducted into the American Ski Jumping Hall of Fame with his son .
