Park was first disqualified for false starts. The disqualification was withdrawn after a protest by the Korean Federation. Cornel Marculescu, executive director of the umbrella organization FINA , said Park's shrug on the starting block was unconscious and did not affect the race.

Yang achieved the third fastest time ever swum over this distance. Only world record holder Paul Biedermann and the Australian Ian Thorpe, whose best performance is 1/100 of a second below the world record.
Yang is also the first male Olympic swimming champion from China.
