The competition over 100m butterfly men at the 2012 Olympics in London was on 2 and 3 August 2012 at London Aquatics Center held. 43 athletes took part.

There were six preliminary runs. The 16 fastest swimmers of all heats qualified for the two semi-finals that were held on the same day. Here too, the finalists qualified by setting the eight fastest times in both semi-finals.

Matsuda swam the same time as Benjamin Starke in the fourth heat. In the final accounts, this time was enough for the last participant place in the semi-finals. Matsuda refrained from stinging with Stark.

The winner Phelps is Olympic champion over 100 meters butterfly for the third time in a row and the first man to have achieved this at the Olympic Games. For him it was the eleventh individual victory and the 17th gold medal overall.
There were two dead races on this track. Korotyshkin and le Clos struck at the same time, both got silver, the bronze medal was therefore dropped. Čavić and Deibler also hit behind at the same time, both were placed in fourth place.
