The contest over 200 meters freestyle men at the 2012 Olympics in London on 29 and 30 July 2012 at the London Aquatics Center held. 33 athletes took part.
There were six preliminary runs. The 16 fastest swimmers of all heats qualified for the two semi-finals that were held on the same day. Here too, the finalists qualified by setting the eight fastest times in both semi-finals.

There was a dead race between Yang and Tae-hwan, both struck at the same time. The silver medal was thus awarded twice, the bronze medal was dropped.
Agnel achieved the first French Olympic victory on this route, Yang won the first medal for China in this discipline.
The Frenchman swam the third fastest time ever swum on this distance. Only world record holder Biedermann and the Olympic champion from Beijing, Michael Phelps, were faster.
