Qualification criteria

25 athletes had qualified for the competition:

  • Ten female swimmers who took the first ten places at the 2011 World Swimming Championships in Shanghai
  • Nine swimmers who took part in the qualifying competition in Setúbal ( Portugal ) on 8./9. June 2012 took the first nine places
  • Five female swimmers who represented the five continental federations of FINA and who were determined by their placement in the qualifying competition of Setúbal
  • A host nation swimmer

Of the 24 swimmers who started, the Chinese Yanqiao did not start, 22 crossed the finish line. In the fourth round, the Brazilian Okimoto was brought into the lifeboat. Eliana Alves, spokeswoman for the Brazilian team, said the athlete suffered from hypothermia . The South African Roux was also taken out of the water.
