The contest over 100 meters butterfly women at the 2012 Olympics in London was on 28 and 29 July 2012 at the London Aquatics Center held. 42 athletes took part.

There were six preliminary runs. The 16 fastest swimmers of all heats qualified for the two semi-finals, which were held on the same day. The eight fastest starters of both races qualified here for the final on the next day.

Inge Dekker (NED) decided not to start in the semi-finals in order to be able to take part in the final of the 100-meter freestyle relay, which takes place just one hour later. The Canadian Katerine Savard slipped into the semi-finals for Dekker.

With her world record, Dana Vollmer is the first woman to finish in under 56 seconds.
The race is the fastest in Olympic history, and not just because of the world record. For the first time all medal winners stayed under 57 seconds, for the first time all finalists stayed under 58 seconds.
The Italian Ilaria Bianchi, fifth in the final, was able to improve the Italian record twice in the Olympic competition.
