Michael Phelps is the first male swimmer in Olympic history to achieve a triple victory in a row in a discipline.
Phelps, Lochte and Cseh were already on the podium in Beijing in 2008 in this discipline, but in a different order. At that time Phelps won over Cseh and Lochte. It was the first time in Olympic swimming competitions that all three medal winners came back on the podium.
For the first time, all finalists crossed the finish line in less than two minutes.
