For the first time, seven of the eight finalists finished under a minute.
While Olympic champion van der Burgh improved two records (Olympic record in the semifinals, Olympic and world record in the final), the Hungarian Gyurta, who finished fourth, was able to improve the Hungarian record three times in this competition.
After viewing footage of the race, it was suspected that the winner van der Burgh made three dolphin legs after the turn. Only one leg kick is allowed. However, since no underwater camera was installed, the judges had no means of disqualification. Van der Burgh admitted in an interview with the Australian daily Sydney Morning Herald that he had used these illicit leg blows.
