In 2008 he won his first national medal with bronze in the 200 m medley - a result that he was able to repeat in 2009. His first international championships were the European Short Course Championships in Istanbul in 2009 , in which his best place was 13th on his parade course 200 m chest.

A year later, Jamieson was the first British champion in the 200m breaststroke and won silver over half the distance. In the same year he reached 10th place over 200 m chest at the European Championships on the long track in Budapest and silver behind Brenton Rickard at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi . In 2011 Michael Jamieson made his debut at world championships in Shanghai and reached the 200m breaststroke final, where he was fifth. He took sixth place with the British layer relay. At the European Short Course Championships in Szczecin , he won bronze over his special route behind Dániel Gyurta and Vyacheslav Sinkevich . He finished eighth over 100 m breaststroke and fifth with the 4 × 50 m individual medley.

2012 was Michael Jamieson part of the British team for the Olympic Games in London . He initially reached the semi-finals over 100 m breaststroke and just barely missed the final run as ninth overall. A few days later he sovereignly qualified for the final over 200 m breaststroke , setting new British records both in the preliminary and in the semifinals. In the final he was able to beat his record again and won silver in 2: 07.43 minutes behind Dániel Gyurta, who set new world and Olympic records, and in front of Ryo Tateishi . With the British relay over 4 × 100 m individual medley he was fourth. At the end of 2012 he won silver again behind Gyurta at the short course world championships in Istanbul over 200 m breaststroke.

In the post-Olympic year Jamieson was plagued by injuries, but was able to repeat his fifth place over 200 m chest from 2011 at the 2013 World Swimming Championships in Barcelona . Over 100 m chest he finished 15th. He also won silver at the European Short Course Championships in Herning behind Dániel Gyurta and in front of Marco Koch . He also reached the finals over 100 m breaststroke and was sixth, with the mixed relay over 4 × 50 m individual medley fourth. In 2014, he won silver at the Commonwealth Games in his native Glasgow behind his compatriot Ross Murdoch , but only finished 11th over half the distance.

In 2015 it was only enough to finish sixth at the British Championships over 200 m breaststroke and he was not nominated for the World Championships . After a fifth place on his parade course 200 m chest in the British elimination races in 2016, he missed the qualification for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro .

Michael Jamieson won five gold, three silver and four bronze medals at British championships between 2008 and 2015. He trains in Bath with Dave McNulty and Graeme Antwhistle.
