Triin Aljand (born July 8, 1985 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian swimmer . Their main routes are the short butterfly and freestyle routes .

Career

Aljand, who was coached by her father Riho at the beginning of her career, made her international debut together with her twin sister Berit at the Junior European Championships in 2001. There she was eliminated in both the 50 m freestyle and 50 m butterfly in the semifinals. In the same year she started at the European Short Course Championships in Antwerp over 50 m butterfly for the first time in the seniors, but was eliminated there in the preliminary run. At the 2003 World Championships in Barcelona , she managed over the 50 m butterfly to qualify for the first time in an international championship for the semi-finals. But where she had to be content with 16th place. At the 2003 European Short Course in Dublin she was eliminated on this route with the eleventh fastest time in the semifinals. Together with her twin sister, she reached the final run with the individual layer relay. The Estonian quartet had to be content with the last place there. At the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004 , she started the 50 m freestyle, but was eliminated as 26th in the preliminary runs. Aljand, whose younger brother Martti is also a swimmer, competed in the 2004 European Short Course Championships in Vienna in the 50 m freestyle and 50 m backstroke as well as over 100 m medley. Failed with places eleven, thirteen and ten in the semifinals. With a new Estonian record of 27.31 seconds, she also qualified for the semi-finals at the 2005 World Championships in Montréal over the 50 m butterfly. Where, however, she was only able to take 15th place. That year she moved to Texas A&M University in the USA, where she has been part of the swim team ever since. In the years that followed, Aljand was unable to improve her performance and was mostly eliminated in the preliminary stages of international championships. As in 2004, she qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing . Missed the qualification for the semi-finals there in the 50 m or 100 m freestyle and 100 m butterfly. It wasn't until the European Short Course Championships in Rijeka in 2008 that she made her international breakthrough. In the 50 m freestyle competition qualified for the final run and took seventh place. On her parade route, the 50 m butterfly, she also made it to the finals with the third-best semi-final time. There she missed her first international medal by two hundredths of a second. On both courses she managed to improve the Estonian records, where she improved the Estonian record over 50 m butterfly both in the preliminary and in the semifinals and later again in the final. She was able to repeat these good performances at the European Short Course Championships in 2009 in Istanbul and achieved fifth and sixth places in the 50 m freestyle and 50 m butterfly respectively with new Estonian records. Even on the 50-meter track, she managed to swim to the top of Europe. So she reached the finals over 50 m freestyle and 50 m butterfly at the European Swimming Championships 2010 in Budapest . Where she finished seventh and fifth. At the 2010 European Short Course in Eindhoven, she won her first international medal. Over 50 m butterfly Aljand won the bronze medal behind the Dutch Inge Dekker and Hinkelien Schreuder . In the 100 m butterfly she was sixth. Two weeks later she finished sixth in the 50 meter butterfly and fifth in the 50 meter freestyle at the 2010 World Short Course Championships in Dubai . On the 50 meter track, she reached the semi-finals of the 50 meter freestyle and 50 meter butterfly at the 2011 World Swimming Championships in Shanghai , where she finished 16th and twelfth. In Szczecin , Aljand won the silver medal over 50 meters butterfly at the European Short Course Championships 2011 behind Jeanette Ottesen , who set a new championship record with 24.92 seconds. In the 50 meters freestyle she secured her second medal behind Britta Steffen and Jeanette Ottesen. At the European Swimming Championships in Debrecen in 2012 , Aljand won an international medal on the 50-meter lane for the first time. Over 50 meters butterfly she came second behind Sarah Sjöström . She improved the Estonian record to 25.92 seconds. She also reached the final run in the 50 meter freestyle. Despite the Estonian record of 25.01 seconds, she just missed another medal in fourth.
