geography

history

Green Cove Springs was founded in 1816 as a sawmill. At that time the area was still part of the Spanish colony of Florida . In 1854, the small town with the name White Sulfur Springs was added as a town and renamed Green Cove Springs in 1866 . It became the county seat in 1871 and remains so to this day.

The city received its first railway connection in 1884 with the construction of the Jacksonville, Tampa & Key West Railway between Jacksonville and Palatka . This line was extended to Sanford in 1886 . After several sales and restructuring, the line finally came into the possession of CSX Transportation in 1986 .

Tourism to the mineral springs in the area developed through the railroad to the main source of income until the end of the 19th century. The next important source of income was the cultivation of citrus fruits . In 1895 a falling cold wave destroyed the harvest and tourism also failed to materialize. The automotive industry saw a great opportunity in the 1920s. However, the plans for the city's progress were thwarted in the 1930s with the Great Depression .

During World War II , the city saw its opportunities grow when the US Navy opened the Benjamin Lee Auxiliary Air Field . After the war, the Navy built 13 piers to mothball approximately 600 ships. In 1960 the naval base was abandoned and the ships relocated to another location. In 1984 the city took over the site of the former naval base and built it into a civil port and a new industrial park.
