geography

Orange Park is located on the left bank of the St. Johns River around 15 km north of Green Cove Springs and borders Jacksonville to the north .

history

As a direct consequence of the American Civil War , the old "MacIntosh Plantation" went bankrupt, changed hands several times at short notice and was up for sale. After purchasing a few thousand acres, Orange Park was founded in 1877 by the Florida Winter Home and Improvement Company , owned and invested in Boston , Massachusetts . The acquired area was divided up again, this time into plots of different sizes for building houses and farms. The road system was laid out at the same time. To make the new settlement more attractive for buyers from the north, orange trees were planted along the streets. A large hotel was built on the river bank with a 400 m long wooden jetty so that the large steamships that sailed the St. Johns River up north could also dock here.

Since those days, Orange Park has grown dramatically and has developed as the northeast gateway to Clay County. In 1995 a new town hall was built.
