Ponta do Ouro

Ponta do Ouro , in German Golden Peak or Golden Hill , often shortened to Ponta d'Ouro or just Ponta , is a well-known seaside resort in southern Mozambique . The seaside resort is located about 120 kilometers from the capital Maputo and 15 kilometers from the border with South Africa .

The main source of income for the place is tourism. Especially weekend vacationers from Maputo and South African visitors come to the seaside resort. The arched beach, protected by rocks and coral reefs at the ends, allows recreational activities such as surfing, windsurfing, but also diving and snorkeling as well as observing animals such as dolphins, hippos and manatees. Due to tourism, numerous small shops, banks and above all hotels and lodges have developed in the place. Due to the large influx of South African holidaymakers, English is the common lingua franca and the rand is an accepted currency.

The place is accessible via a sand road (EN200) to Catembe . Due to the sandy road surface, a drive to Maputo takes about three to four hours, and only four-wheel drive cars can drive this route. As part of the construction of the bridge between Maputo and Catembe , it is planned to pave the road to Ponta do Ouro, which should cut travel times in half. Sand roads also lead to South Africa, the border crossing is located north of Kwangwanase . On the South African side, the road is already paved.

There is also an airfield for small aircraft in Ponta do Ouro.

Administratively, the place belongs to the Zitundo administrative post, which in turn belongs to the Matutuíne district of the Maputo province .
