Kenneth Turan (born October 27, 1946 in Brooklyn , New York ) is an American film critic , author and lecturer in the Master of Professional Writing Program at the University of Southern California . Turan worked as a film critic for the Los Angeles Times and National Public Radio until 2020 .

Life

Kenneth Turan grew up in a Jewish family in Brooklyn, New York . After earning a bachelor's degree from Swarthmore College and a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University , Turan worked for the Washington Post . In 1991 Turan became a film critic for the Los Angeles Times . In 1993 he was named director of the Los Angeles Times Book Prizes.

Turan can be seen in the documentary For the Love of Movies: The Story of American Film Criticism , in which he discusses his public argument with film director James Cameron , who emailed the editors of the Los Angeles Times to fire Turan after writing a negative review on Titanic . Turan has been a lecturer in the University of Southern California's Master of Professional Writing Program since 1999.

In 2002 he was a member of the international jury at the Berlin International Film Festival . In 2014 he received the Media Legacy Award.

In late March 2020, Turan announced his resignation from the Los Angeles Times . He has also written regularly in the past for the Morning Edition of NPR . Turan serves on the board of directors of the Yiddish Book Center , the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and the National Society of Film Critics .
